Panel Sheds Light on Slavery, Genocide in Sudan

Denver - June 18, 2009 - An expert panel discussed the unending slavery and genocide in Sudan during an interview with Studio 12 host Tamara Banks. The program is available for free video-on-demand viewing on the KBDI-Channel 12 website at www.KBDI.org.

Insight and information was provided by Pastor Heidi McGinness, Christian Solidarity International's USA Outreach Director who is an abolitionist of slavery in the region. She spoke about the ongoing slavery and violence even after the treaty was signed. McGinness was joined by Isaac Khor Bher, a lost boy of Sudan who was displaced from his home and family when he was a young boy. Bher told his personal story and what he witnessed as a child. Dr. Amy Eckert, Assistant Professor at Metro State College of Denver, discussed what the situation is currently and what else can be done.

Dani Freid, the co-founder of Change the World It Just Takes Cents, an organization that uses high school students around the world to collect spare change in order to help the impoverished region, told how she helped found the group as a high school project which eventually became an international movement. Former U.S. Congressmen Tom Tancredo also participated by providing insight into what Congress was trying to do about the problem while he was in office.

During the program excerpts from Tamara Banks' documentary, The Long Journey Home, were shown, which documents the devastation the area has seen.
