Volunteers rake, make a difference for low-income seniors

On Saturday, Oct. 25 -- Make a Difference Day -- more than 500 volunteers converged at Volunteers of America on Laimer Street and 29th in Denver to pick up rakes, leaf bags and lists of seniors whose lawns needed some TLC this fall.

Dozens of groups including Jack and Jill of America, Brunetti Lofts, and Thomas Jefferson High School donated the day to raking the yards of more than 250 seniors who live in single family homes and qualify as low-income.

Without local family or financial resources, many seniors are unable to perform regular upkeep on their property.

Volunteers of America's Handyman Program is dedicated to helping these elderly Coloradoans stay safe and independant in their own homes.

The Handyman Program also offers a "Snow Buddy Program" where Denver neighbors can "adopt a senior"and shovel a walkway of a homebound senior after a snowstorm.

If you are interested in helping a senior neighbor in Denver, contact Volunteers of America at 303-297-0408.
