The Uncommon Thread, a denim boutique located at 3455 West 32nd Avenue in Denver's Highland Neighborhood today announced the winner of its fundraising competition to benefit The Challenge Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit whose primary goal is to help low-income students attend college who would otherwise be unable.
Sarahi Hernandez, a junior at St. Mary's Academy in Englewood, Colo. won the contest with her winning T-shirt design that represented how The Challenge Foundation has changed her life. Her design illustrated a bird flying out of a cage, which represents how The Challenge Foundation has allowed her to open up to a new environment and given her the freedom to strive for her passions and live her dream.
The T-shirt will be printed for both men and women and sold at The Uncommon Thread for the 2009 Holiday season. All profits from the shirt will go to The Challenge Foundation.
"The students at The Challenge Foundation program were ecstatic about the opportunity of creating a design for a t-shirt to be sold at The Uncommon Thread," said Kristen Wells, executive director of The Challenge Foundation. "This was a great way for the kids to demonstrate their creativity and design skills. We are grateful to the store for its donations to the foundation and for helping us build awareness of the program and our talented students."
On Nov. 4, The Uncommon Thread hosted a party and announced the winner of the T-shirt contest. Presales for the T-shirt were sold that evening with proceeds going back to the foundation which provides a variety of support services including a scholarship to a college preparatory middle school and high school, case management, mentoring, tutoring and an academic and enrichment based summer program. In addition to the contest announcement, 10 percent of the evening sales went back to The Challenge Foundation.
