Denver - Yelps of delight will ripple across the Chotin Family Outdoor Pool at the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, rain, snow or shine. Canines not only will be in the swim, but also can play games, compete in contests, vie for prizes, make new buddies, pose for professional photography -- or just relax in the shady courtyard (aka the "DUDLEY senior center" for less frisky or older pets) near the aquatics activities. It's all part of the JCC 1 st Annual Dog Day Afternoon.
Some lucky dogs even may get adopted and find "forever homes" before the wagging is over, says Lisa Tanguma, a JCC fitness instructor and primary pack leader hoping to turn her dreams into reality for deserving four-legged friends.
She and Stuart Raynor, executive director and fellow dog fan, initiated the plan to invite dogs to the JCC at 350 S. Dahlia St., including several adoptable ones desperate for good homes. They discovered their shared love for the creatures, while chatting during his personal training led by her. As the idea took shape for a benefit swim party, this deed of loving kindness for doggies is drawing volunteers and prize donors. Meanwhile too, the JCC is winning kudos and gratitude from nonprofit groups dedicated to dogs.
"Wow, I just cannot thank you enough for this really amazing and generous offer!" stresses Darci Kunard, rescue coordinator for Mile High Weimaraner Rescue, who is arranging for several adorable potential adoptees to be present in response to Tanguma's invitation.
During the play-day for pups JCC members age 10 or older and staff can bring their dogs for a splash-happy finale to the seasonal use of the pool, which will be drained and cleaned after pets exit. What makes the event worth barking about, Tanguma explains, is the JCC community members' commitment to help as many other dogs as possible, while entertaining their own at the pool.
Proceeds will go to the Denver Dumb Friends League, Max Fund or Colorado Weimaraner Rescue. For admission, each participant (DOG) must donate a minimum of $6 cash, three cans of dog food, a new chew toy, two gently used blankets, three towels or one small bag of dog food but people are welcome to donate more for those puppies in need. Only spayed, neutered, vaccinated, well-mannered dogs will be allowed on the premises. Visiting dogs can engage in schmooze time and contests involving look-alikes, costumes, best tricks, agility, ice cubes, swimming and tennis ball frenzy.
