Saving Colorado's Great Danes...
Contributed by: Kenneth Szarka on 5/29/2008

Saving Rocky Mountain's Gentle Giants

Economic times are making everyone pull their belts in a little tighter and people are having trouble taking care of their pets or keeping them if they've lost their home. No where is this more evident than with the Rocky Mountain Great Dane Rescue.

Due to their large size people are struggling to be able to afford their food and routine maintenance care. More then ever these dogs are hidden victims of the foreclosure crisis and a struggling economy; many people purchase them as puppies without realizing the impact they will have on their family as they grow larger. This has caused a huge financial strain on the rescue that relies on volunteer foster homes to house the pets while they await adoption. "We spend about $350 on each Dane that walks through our doors," says RMGDI President Lori Rice. "We expect to spend more than $150,000 in medical expenses this year alone." Expenses include neutering and spaying, as well as food and medical costs.

While Rocky Mountain Great Dane Rescue's organization is able to adopt out 100 percent of the Danes it takes in, there simply isn't enough space to save them all. In 2007, Rocky Mountain Great Dane Rescue placed more than 300 adoptable Great Danes in loving homes. This year, more than 80 Great Danes have been adopted to date. On average, the rescue has nearly 45 adoptable Danes and is in huge need of foster volunteers to help care for the Danes while they are waiting to be placed in their forever homes. Our foster program pays for all of the food and medical costs while the foster parents provide loving homes and attention. We need the community's support both through fostering and monetary assistance.

The rescue is participating in Great Dane at the Park at Tanner Park 2700 E Heritage Way On Saturday May31st from 10:00am-2:00pm. Please join us as this is a great way to learn about the breed, ask questions, and meet adoptable Danes.

RMGDRI is completely run by volunteers who educate the public and potential owners about caring for this wonderful breed through various community efforts. They are a Colorado corporation and has a charitable tax-exemption under code 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. RMGDR is staffed completely by volunteers. Therefore, 100% of the funds donated go to helping their Great Danes. For more information about fostering, adoption, or contributing donations visit: www.rmgreatdane.org or call (303) 552-0484.
