Mike and Janet Johnston moved to Denver in 2004 with a simple plan: Open up a gourmet spice shop. With a second location added a couple of years later and a third currently in the works, the Savory Spice Shop has become a hot commodity in the Denver culinary world. Chefs and foodies alike have been shopping here all along, impressed with the staggering number of choices available, as well as the freshness of the product. You might be resigned to the taste of bottled spices from the grocery store; sitting on the shelves for who knows how long, ground by a faceless machine in some warehouse somewhere. Tasting a bit like sawdust and, well, really old spices, these products bear almost no resemblance to what you'll discover inside the Shop.
When you first walk in you're hit with a thousand aromas. Not in a sickly, potpourri way, but in a way that makes you hungry, a way that gives the sense of being at a local market in some exotic locale - like you're privy to the source of something. Hundreds of glass jars line the shelves, giving you the impression that you might be in an alchemist's shop.
