Odyssey students to collect donations for UNICEF at Halloween

Students in the 4th and 5th grade crew at The Odyssey School have decided to Trick or Treat for UNICEF this year.

On Halloween, Odyssey students will carry orange collection boxes during their trick-or-treat rounds in the Stapleton and Park Hill neighborhoods. They will ask for small monetary donations to help needy children.

Teacher Jason Shiroff says his students created this service-learning project when one of them learned about the 59-year-old "Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF" program and suggested the class try it.

Shiroff's crew is connecting their community service to classroom studies through writing of letters and presentations, public speaking, and math skills such as totaling large sums and graphing results. Posters were created by the group as part of an art project learning how to communicate graphically. (An example drawn by Drew, Laurel and Rafael follows.)

"When you Trick-or-Treat, carry a UNICEF box with you. Tell them if they give 6¢ that provides clean water to one thirsty kid. And, then, they might even give you more money," explain Odyssey students Kevin, Asiya and Giselle in a letter to other students.

UNICEF is the United Nations Children's Fund. It works worldwide to save childrens' lives. They provide clean water, basic nutrition and immunizations to millions.
