Will I get a YEAR in JAIL for my DOGS ?
Contributed by: Augusta Vigil on 8/22/2005

August 19, 2005 Ladies and Gentlemen:

Subject: PIT Bull Ban

My name is Augusta Vigil, and I am a proud owner of TWO Pit Bulls. On July 13, 2005 Animal Control officers entered my daughter’s home unattended to retrieve the dogs. I feel that qualifies as trespassing. Maybe if the dogs were running loose or posing a threat, but they weren’t. On July, 15 we retrieved our dogs paying a total of $125.00 for the boarding fees and the microchip embedding. I had previously contacted Rita Anderson, the Underground Railroad coordinator. I had to sign over the dogs to her proving that they we’re leaving Denver. They we’re to be transferred to Mariah’s Promise. First I had to CASTORATE both males and bring them current on their vaccinations. The fees for these procedures came to $248.50.  Within a matter of a few hours my dogs had something seen in “The Matrix” embedded in their head.  Imagine their thoughts while this was happening. Total Strangers with no comforting words injecting them with a microchip. (No details of this procedure we’re given to me.) Then my daughters and I show up to get them. We we’re happy; they we’re happy, I’ve never felt so loved in my entire life. They knocked me over and smothered me with their kisses. No words, their actions said everything. We placed them in Rita’s vehicle to drive them to the Vet. I insisted on sitting in the back with them. I wanted to spend every second I could to comfort them. Upon arrival at the clinic I couldn’t take them inside. I didn’t have the heart. Once again they we’re in the hands of total strangers. Poor guys had no idea that their body parts would be cut open and dissected.      Luckily, my daughter’s grandparents heard about the situation and came to pick them up to relocate our babies to their Mountain home located 85 miles away. I’m happy that they are safe and alive. I’m sorry that they are confused and probably feel like we don’t want them anymore. Their only crime was being born a certain breed. I am a mother of four their ages are 19, 18, 9 and 6.When my two oldest daughters brought home a pit bull as the new family pet I was upset. I too had thought Pit Bulls we’re vicious and monsters. My feelings are completely the opposite. I can’t believe that I only judged them by what others said. I wonder if they’ve spent any one on one time with a Pit Bull. They only smother us with licks and cuddle constantly. I’ve never seen them aggressive around other humans or animals. I am facing two hefty fines of $850.00 for each animal and a year in jail. Am I bothered YES. Whatever the outcome at court I’ll deal with it, but in no way whatsoever could I have lived with myself or faced my children knowing that I allowed the city and county of Denver to come into our home abduct or dogs and terminate them, and toss them in the dumpster or toss them in the incinerator. Instead I let them imbed microchip, tag them and castrate them. These are members of our family. Their lives we’re spared and I can sleep at night. It wasn’t easy being a single mother of four to pay $373.50 in fees (Sonya Dias who is a notary public saved me an additional$30.00 by accompanying us.) City and County of Denver I hope you feel good about this. Why don’t you come and explain to my kids why this makes sense. I sure can’t. Please consider holding the owners responsible. I have a prior animal violation and did a day in jail. My CHOW bit the child next door. I had a written letter from the girl’s mother admitting her child teased and taunted my CHOW Asia, and provoked her. I was held accountable and paid my price. I’ve been on both sides and I know which side I will stand by.  Sincerely,

Augusta Vigil
