After sneaking by security (and the droves of people who had sat in traffic to hear
Barack Obama speak) I found myself a spot, about ten rows from the stage. The crowd was more excited than any I had ever seen at a ballgame and to prove it they did "the wave" five times round - with fervor!
We waited for a long time to finally hear the magnanimous, inspiring senator present his beliefs on the issues and our need for change. I have to say, I too was empowered by his words. It was refreshing, I think, to hear a candidate talk about changing the world - after all, it seems like that might be what we need. I applauded with the crowd as he shouted about getting out of Iraq - NOW!
I cheered with my peers as he declared that we would no longer have
George W Bush Politics running our nation. I whistled my finest ear-piercing whistle when he spoke of uniting all parties and all people to create one nation.
When the environment came up, however, I had a slightly different reaction. Barack Obama professed that it's time we ended our addiction to oil. "HOORAH!" shouted the crowd.
"BOOOO!" said I. "Y'all f&%$ing drove here!"
Slowly, hands still clapping, my neighbors (my comrades, my fellow supporters) turned towards me - the young woman holding her bike helmet proudly - with eyebrows raised and lips slightly parted. I blushed, as I do best, and stared back.
They slowly turned back towards their newfound hero, hands still clapping, and I quickly exited before my monomaniacal ways got the best of me.
