Brighton’s Events Complex is Financially Smart
Contributed by: Todd Cordrey on 10/11/2007

The Brighton Events Complex is a smart economic decision for Brightonians. The complex will host over 200,000 visitors each year. It is estimated that about half of these visitors will come from outside the Brighton city limits. It is also likely that each visitor will spend $10 per visit. This means that there will be a direct cash infusion into the Brighton economy of $2,000,000 per year. It is also widely accepted by economists that each new dollar into a community will generate 7 more dollars of economic growth for that community. The city will also increase city revenue through aggressive negotiating for the highest monthly lease coupled with a partnership share of the profits. These activities will lead Brighton out of its economic slow-down and toward financial prosperity.

The long-term implications of this project are awesome. The Brighton Events Complex will be an income generation tool for 80 plus years. This project alone will expand the total sales tax revenue the city receives and therefore reduces the likelihood for future tax increases. It is financially astute for the city to purchase an asset that will generate tax revenue for decades beyond the initial payment of the asset. This additional sales tax revenue will help those programs that require city sales tax revenue to survive and prosper such as parks and recreation, senior center, public works and the police department. A growing and healthy Brighton economy is good for all citizens especially those that use the city services the most. The Brighton Events Complex will also add to the many quality of life amenities we all enjoy in Brighton. It is exactly this quality of life and healthy local economy which attracts profitable fortune 500 companies to communities such as Brighton. These companies would provide quality high paying jobs for Brightonians now and throughout the 21 st century.

There are also many other equally strong reasons to support the Brighton Events Complex. The complex will provide a family friendly, affordable venue for concerts, rodeos, and minor league baseball. The city of Brighton will also guarantee the use of the complex for public events such as relay for life, 4 th of July celebration and Culturefest. The school district will now have a facility large enough to accommodate High School graduation, staff events, and statewide band and sports competitions.

The cost of the bond to construct the complex is 20 cents on every $100 dollars spent in Brighton. It is estimated that a family will pay $10 per year for this new city asset. This time limited expense is out-weighed by the short-term and long-term financial benefit.

As a final thought the Brighton Events complex is a financially smart move for all Brightonians, therefore Vote Yes on 2A.
