In the hierarchy of Denver dance teams, the Broncos reign supreme over all others - at least according to Julianne Luick. The 23-year-old cheerleader hopeful and former Colorado Rapids dancer likened the Broncos to the "major league of dance teams" while waiting along with 59 other dancers for a chance to interview with the judges during the April 1 audition at Invesco Field at Mile High.

The 60 women who were at the April 1 audition were hand-picked from a group of more than 200 others the previous weekend to attend the final round of tryouts.

Luick, who originally is from outside Chicago but attended the University of Southern California, said she felt pretty confident because she constantly works out and practices dance to stay prepared for auditions. It also didn't hurt that the person getting her in shape for tryouts had insider knowledge of the tryout process.

"My personal trainer was a former Broncos cheerleader," Luick said. "We focused on presentation. Making sure that during the audition they (the judges) can picture you on the field."

Laura Sobon, a 23-year-old business consultant, was especially intent on clinching a spot on the team for the second year in a row - especially after having to try out twice before finally making the team last year. Sobon said that despite the long wait, being a Broncos cheerleader was entirely worthwhile.

"I was on the team last year and it was a life-changing experience in a positive way," Sobon said. "It would be a great feeling to make it back."

Some of Sobon's favorite experiences during her rookie season on the team were the New Year's Eve game because her family was there and all the charity work the cheerleaders performed, but she thought "everything was awesome."

In the end, Sobon will enter her second year of cheering for the Broncos and Luick will have to wait another year to audition again along with the many other women who didn't find their way onto the 34-person roster.
