In the beginning of a hopefully long history of collegiate swimming on the Western Slope, the
Metro State Roadrunners women's swim team composed of
Kathy Lind,
Theresa Irwin,
Elizabeth Michael-Trumbull,
Laura Michael-Trumbull and
Meredith Lanphier (the Fab Five) swam past
Mesa State 64-48 in the first collegiate swimming meet ever in Grand Junction.
The Roadrunners began and ended the meet in winning fashion with wins in the 400-yard medley relay (4:34.69) and 400- yard freestyle relay (4:01.19).
Freshman Elizabeth Michael-Trumbull added to her relay victories with wins in the 200- (2:13.88) and 500- (6:17.99) yard freestyles. Sophomore Kathy Lind also added two individual victories in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.13) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.79).
Laura Michael-Trumbull split her events with a win in the 50-yard freestyle (28.51) and a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:59.87). Meredith Lanphier added two second-places to the team scoring in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:29.93) and the 100-yard freestyle (59.65).
Swimming the distance events, Theresa Irwin scored a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:54.02) and was runner-up in both the 1650-yard freestyle (21:09.78) and 400-yard individual medley (5:28.80).
Mesa State coach
Brian Pearson, formerly of Colorado College and the entire Mesa State staff are to be congratulated and commended in their initiation of the swimming program and will have a new swimming and diving facility in 2008 to further advance the program.
The Roadrunners Men's and Women's swimming and diving teams will return to their holiday training facility at Colorado College in Colorado Springs January 26-28.
