CCU's Stenberg an Unlikely Hero in Weekend Wins
Contributed by: Colorado Christian University on 1/31/2007

Lakewood, Colorado - On January 12, 2007, with eight-tenths of a second hanging on the clock and every eye in the packed Colorado Christian University Event Center glued to CCU guard Joey Stenberg, the 6-1 senior from Lincoln, Nebraska, calmly approached the line and drained two free throws propelling the Cougars over Western New Mexico University (WNMU) and toward victory two nights in a row. Defending a one point Cougar lead, Stenberg outmatched the Mustang big men, muscling a tough offensive rebound and in the process drawing a foul that sent him to the free throw line where he sealed the 71-68 win.

Only a few days prior, Stenberg was notified that he would be the newest addition to his team's starting lineup due to fresh injuries sustained in an already depleted Cougar backcourt. Coming into the 2006-2007 season, the reserve guard had appeared in 25 games for CCU, but his court time was limited-averaging just 11.5 minutes per outing-and he had yet to make an appearance among the starting five. Yet Stenberg's addition proved clutch during the recent win over WNMU.

The following evening, trailing by two points with 10 seconds left against New Mexico Highlands University, Stenberg emerged under the boards to recover a missed CCU three point attempt and his adept play once again resulted in a free throw opportunity. With the outcome of the game resting squarely on his shoulders, he sent two through the hoop and the contest into overtime. The Cougars eventually outscored the Cowboys 15-3 during the extended period in an 87-75 final. Stenberg finished the weekend with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals.

His recent on-court achievements were a welcomed surprise for Stenberg, whose usual platform for success is the classroom. An academic all-conference nominee, he has maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout his collegiate career, studied abroad in Oxford, England, and Spain, and was the 2006 CCU valedictorian. Stenberg also served as editor in chief for the CCU student newspaper, completed an internship with U.S. senator Chuck Hagel, and founded the CCU Circle, an organization that publishes undergraduate essays.
