Denver Barbarians lost in San Diego to Old Mission Beach Athletic Club 43-17 in an important Rugby Super League (RSL) Red Conference match Saturday.
OMBAC takes over second place in the Red (Western) Conference behind Belmont Shore who took a win with its 39-10 win over Santa Monica. Belmont leads the Red Conference with 22 table points, OMBAC with 21, Denver and San Francisco Golden Gate are tied for third with 20 points. Denver has the tiebreaker with Belmont and San Francisco, due to beating both of those teams. Belmont Shore and OMBAC meet next week in Long Beach. San Francisco, who pounded Old Puget Sound 56-10 yesterday, plays at Santa Monica.
Coach Dave Hodges praised his players for their effort under difficult circumstances, believes there is much to learn from the loss, and firmly maintains there is much for his side to play for this week.
OMBAC used their speed and ability to counter attack off of Denver mistakes to defeat the conference leader. Halftime score was OMBAC 19, Barbarians 10. OMBAC deserved the victory on the day, scoring seven tries to the Barbarian's three tries.
Nic Johnson, Tyson Meek and David Yavala each scored for Denver. Dan Bludeau had a conversion kick, much like an American football extra point kick, after Yavala's score.
Denver closes the regular season at home against Old Puget Sound at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, May 3, at 3:00 pm.
