Baseball's over. Holiday-shopping can wait until the really big sales. Let's face it: you live here for one reason only, and that reason, is ski season.

First comes motivation. Not the boot-camp, stair-climbing, butt-burning lunges kind, the Warren Miller kind. If you need a little spark to get excited for the upcoming season, head to a screening of the 58th Warren Miller film, " Playground," narrated by Mr. Dinner Roll himself, Jonny Mosely. The master of all ski and snowboard movies is back with a film highlighting resorts from SkiDubai (yes, that Dubai), to our very own Copper Mountain, Colo. Head to the Paramount Theatre in Denver, at 1621 Glenarm Place. They have 11 showings between Wednesday, Nov. 14, and Sunday, Nov. 18. Tickets are $23. P.S. you get a free ticket to Copper/Winter Park...

Next comes equipment. Do you live for the opportunity to hit the slopes every weekend? Then it's probably a good idea to buy some equipment. If you can only afford one piece of equipment, boots are the way to go--skiers and boarders alike. Comfortable boots are key to a great experience. Sniagrab is still on the grid, so head over to Sports Authority.

If you don't have your own skis or board, there are plenty of rental options. First decide if renting at the ski area or down in the city is best for you. Think about how to get your equipment up in the car - no ski rack means you should probably rent at the resort itself. Keep in mind that renting here is much cheaper than renting at the mountain.

If you're partial to one or two resorts, a season pass might be in your future. The same companies own many resorts, and offer multi-packs for use at different mountains. The Colorado Pass lets you ride at A-Basin, Breck, and Keystone unlimited and select days at Vail and Beaver Creek for $449. Or, for $369, you can get unlimited runs at both Copper Mountain and Winter Park/Mary Jane.

Staying the night after a long day of skiing? It's time to think about après ski. Aspen and Vail rank in the top five for the hottest nightlife. Aspen also hosts nighttime Snow-Cat rides, and don't forget about the see-and be-seen X games, Jan. 24-27, 2008.

If the slopes kicked your butt, it's time to hit the hot tubs. Steamboat's Strawberry Park Natural Hot Springs will do the trick, as will the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool. This is a great way to unwind after a hard day riding the mountain. If you still haven't had your fill of the hill, check out the night skiing at several resorts, most notably Keystone, which has 15 trails and a half-pipe lit for the night.

Quick...friends are coming into town for the holidays and.... They. Don't. Ski. Uh-oh. What to do with a feisty bunch of snow-seekers that involves the mountain, but not the actual slopes?

For the non-ski bums, most resorts have lots to offer for non-riders. Snowmass has a great tubing hill, Beaver Creek offers a skating rink close to the ski area, and Vail's premier shopping district (not to mention fantastic people-wtching) is just steps away from the powder. Most ski areas also have snowshoeing trails available. Or, kick back with a good book in the lodge and watch your friends shiver their way through the day. Many of Colorado's ski towns are rich with culture and history. Venture past the tourist spots to discover what these mountain towns are really about.
