Alternative responses to rising gasoline prices
Contributed by: Mary White on 5/22/2007

Colorado drivers experiencing record for the highest gasoline prices. A gallon costs $3.215 for regular unleaded gasoline, $3.422 for mid-grade, and $3.576 for premium plus gasoline. Worst of all, prices are expected to rise.

Statewide, the highest current gasoline prices are in Vail, where regular unleaded sells for a price of $3.407.

Transportation has become expected. For example, the gas cost of a round trip drive from the University of Denver to downtown Denver is approximately $2.74. The distance is 14.5 miles. According to Wikipedia.com, the average car gets approximately 17 miles to the gallon.

Thus, it becomes necessary to consider other modes of transportation. These options, however, may depend on the time and distance involved in a forthcoming trip.

One way to avoid increased spending on gasoline is to walk or ride a bike to nearby destinations. Now that the weather has become warmer, it may be easier to walk or bike short distances to work or class, rather than to drive. This may take a bit more time However, in the long run it is a healthy alternative that may be easier on your wallet.

Another option is to car pool. Looking around for friends or neighbors who may be traveling to the same area as you, at about the same time can save some money on gasoline. Unlike walking, the purchase of gasoline will still be necessary, however, the price of the gasoline used on the pooled trip is split between two or more individuals, which cuts personal costs.

One of the most effective ways to travel around Denver and surrounding areas is to take advantage of RTD and its newest service, the light-rail systems. RTD provides transportation services in Denver, Boulder and surrounding cities at affordable prices. Full-time DU students receive an RTD pass from the university that provides transportation to everywhere that RTD travels.

Without a pass, however, a one-way trip within the city of Denver costs $1.50 in cash, which includes transfers. A one-way trip to Boulder in cash costs $3.75.

For more information on the prices of traveling with RTD system, its routes and schedules, you can visit RTD-Denver.com.

While the prices of gasoline may have put many people in a financial bind, instead of complaining about the prices of the convenient transportation of driving your car, it may be worth it to consider alternative modes of transportation.
