I Can Do WHAT With My Power Drill?
Contributed by: Judy Browne on 12/1/2006

That power drill you finally purchased for yoursel, or maybe for someone else, can be used for many things other than just drilling holes. With the proper accessories you can use your power drill to do a plethora ( pleth*o*ra - noun 1. overabundance; excess) of different tasks.

Head to your local hardware store and check out all of these different accessories. They will make great stocking stuffers.

Drilling

Of course you can use your drill to drill holes in a number of different materials. Using the correct drill bit you can put holes in wood, plastic, concrete, brick and ceramic tile. Spade bits have a flat end used for drilling up to 1" holes in wood and plastic. Hole saws - cut up to 2" holes in wood, plastic, plaster and light metals.

Power Screwdriver

Look for a good driver bit set. You can find bits for slotted, Phillips, torx and square drive screws. The bits should have a hex (6 sided) shape to be secured by the chuck in your power drill. You can also find sets that include nut drivers.

Power Sander

You can also use your power drill as a power sander. Look for sanding discs with the hex (6-sided) shaped adapter.

Paint Stirrer

This accessory can usually be found in the paint section of your local hardware store. You can buy sizes that will work in 1 gallon cans up to 5 gallon buckets.

Other accessories you might find handy: Abrasive discs - that zip through most materials, including ceramic tile and hardened steel.Buffers - that polish metal or furniture.Sharpeners - for knife, scissor or lawn mower blades.Wire wheels - that remove rust and paint. Any task that uses a circular motion can probably be powered by your drill. Use your imagination!
