Do it myself? Are you crazy? I have enough to do!
Contributed by: Judy Browne on 4/19/2006

Why should I learn to do it myself? I have enough to do without adding home improvement on top of all the other things. This is a question I get asked quite often and the women that stopped by my booth at the Home & Patio show were no exception. Certainly, if I didn't believe it was important I would have never devoted so much time and effort into creating Workshop for Women.

When I talk about basic home improvement skills I am not talking about building your own home, installing a deck or refinishing your basement (all of which you are capable of doing, but not the point of this article). I am referring to the simple everyday items like repairing drywall, hanging pictures and shelving, replacing light fixtures or building yourself a toolbox, flower box or small bench.

In my opinion there are at least 3 reasons to learn how to do basic home improvement yourself.

#1 Knowledge is Power.

Any time you learn a new skill you are gifted with the power of choice. You may still choose to have someone else handle your basic home improvement tasks, but now it is a personal choice rather than a necessity.

#2 Knowledge is Power.

Maybe you say to yourself "I just don't have time to fix it myself" and in our busy lives this is often the case. But what I am suggesting is that learning to do it yourself just makes sense. Do you really want to hire someone and pay them with your hard earned money when you don't even know what it is you are hiring them to do?

How will you know if the job has been done correctly or professionally? How will you know how long it should take or what materials they should be using? Learning to do it yourself empowers you to make good choices when hiring a professional to take care of your home.

# 3 Knowledge is Power.

It isn't rocket science! When you learn basic home improvement skills your home is no longer a mystery. You discover that what's behind your walls isn't all that interesting and certainly not dangerous and that most things can be done quickly and easily with the right tools and the right information.

I guess that's only one reason, isn't it?

If you'd like to learn how to do some basic home improvement skills yourself let me help you. At Workshop for Women we offer classes for women just like you. You can learn how to use power tools in our class "What the Guys Never Tell Us - Part 1" or how to repair drywall in "FINALLY Fixing that Hole". In every class you have the opportunity to learn and to practice these things yourself. The classes are offered in a safe comfortable environment, with guidance and instruction while you experience the fun of learning a new skill. You will also find that you really do know more than you give yourself credit for. For our current schedule and a list of all of our available classes visit our website at www.workshopforwomen.com.
