How to plan the perfect wedding

Now that I've got about six months of wedding planning experience under my belt, I've decided to share my knowledge with my readers. Hopefully I can help some brides and grooms out there.

Step 1: Don't have a wedding. And you're welcome. What's that? Your husband - like mine - or wife is forcing you to have a wedding? OK, keep reading. But don't say I didn't warn you.

Step 2: Be sure everyone invited gets an STD at least 6 months before the big event. That way everyone can make the proper arrangements beforehand. You'd hate for them to overspend at the last minute; by giving them the STD ahead of time, everyone saves money. By the way, STD means save the date.

Step 3: Are you sure? There's still time to call off the wedding...

Step 4: Pick a location. Alright, it looks like you're stuck on this wedding idea. If you're gonna do it and make all your friends and family suffer through the electric slide, you might as well do it somewhere nice. Take everyone on a vacation and have a destination wedding in Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, Italy...

Step 5: If you haven't already, join theknot.com's message boards. I'd never been in a chat room before getting engaged, but thank God I found my girls! They've given me my wedding location, invitation ideas, back-up photograper, florist and the list goes on and on. My friends may be planning an intervention for my "knotting" obsession, but without my board, I'd be lost.

Step 6: Find a dress. I think there's something wrong with me because this is my least favorite part of the wedding (and that's saying something). I was so anxious to avoid dress shopping that I bought my first dress online. Yes I said first, meaning there's a second. And it looks like there might be a third. I'm so desperate to avoid trying on dresses that I settle for anything - then end up hating it two weeks later.

Step 7: If you must, invite people. My suggestion is to keep it small - definitely under 50. One of the major gripes people have about weddings is that they never even get to talk to the bride and groom. By keeping your guest list small, you can spend your time and attention on the people who matter most.

Step 8: Remember that this is YOUR wedding. If you've followed my advice so far, you're having a fabulous party in an exotic location with your closest friends and family. Sounds perfect, right? Well some people are crazy. They'll give you grief about not inviting people you haven't seen in 10 years, or - God forbid - making them get a passport. Keep in mind that this is your wedding. Yes, you should pick an affordable resort and a location that doesn't take a $1,000 plane ticket to get to. Do what you can to make getting to your wedding easy on your guests, but after that it's up to them. The people who really want to be there on your special day will find a way.

Step 9: Get married 10 months before the wedding. Or maybe that was just me. But the money we're saving on car insurance more than the covers the florist!

Step 10: Have liquor at the reception. Do I really need to explain this one?
Hmmm...did I sound a little pessimistic there? That's because I am. But it's going to be so much fun and everything will go off without a hitch. It'll be worth all the money. Right? Right????
