View wonders of the prehistoric or ancient history
Contributed by: Liz VanLandingham Communications Staff on 1/13/2006

View the natural wonder of the prehistoric leatherback sea turtles coming ashore in the wee hours of the moonlit morning; explore the ancient canals of Venice, following the same routes of some of human kind’s most famous historical figures; hear the unedited symphony of the Central American jungle as the tropical sun points its rays through the dense green canopy to light rainforest; and inhale the nirvana of art in Florence’s museums and streets – all while earning college credits.

Community College of Aurora faculty members in May are leading two trips abroad. One trip will explore the natural history of Costa Rica, the other will visit the historic and artistic sites of Italy. Each trip welcomes the public.

FIELD STUDIES IN COSTA RICA
Professor Sheridan Samano is offering Field Studies in Costa Rica for May 20-30, 2006. The itinerary features many hands-on opportunities to study Costa Rica’s natural wonders. Participants will study endangered leatherback sea turtles on the Caribbean coast and scarlet macaws on the Pacific coast. Other activities include helping local farmers with restoration efforts, whitewater rafting, hikes in the rainforest, and a canopy tour. The total cost for this all-inclusive trip is $2250 (includes transportation, meals, beverages, lodging, activities, and bilingual guides) plus tuition for a three-credit class at the college. For information, please contact Sheridan Samano at 303.340.7299.

SPRING IN ITALY
Art and History highlight a two-week trip to Italy, May 11- 24, 2006. Dr. Geoff Hunt says, “From the canals of Venice to the treasures of the Vatican, the sights, the art, the history, the scenery, the foods – even the light itself – all are unique and unforgettable.” The instructors have used their experience in European travel, and teamed up with educational travel firm NETC to build an itinerary including Venice, Ravenna, Florence, Siena, Sorrento, Pompeii, Capri, and of course – Rome!

Travelers have the option to combine the trip with academic credit. Maria Halloran will offer Art Appreciation, Dr. Rebecca Hunt will teach Survey of Humanities, and Dr. Geoff Hunt will lead a course in Western Civilization. Each course is 3 credits; students can take one, two, or three courses. Tuition is extra.

Travelers will stay in three and four-star, centrally-located hotels, with double-occupancy rooms. The Trip fee includes round-trip air fare from Denver, two meals each day, tour bus, admissions, basic insurance, and a tour guide fluent in English and Italian. Travelers will be responsible for one meal a day, about fifty Euros total for tips, and such incidentals as film and souvenirs. Final cost depends upon how many take part, but is estimated at between $3,500 and $4,000. A deposit of $295 (of which $95 is non-refundable) by November 1, 2005, earns a $300 discount off the total program fee. For more information, contact Geoff Hunt at 303.360.4825.
