Blog Entry 52 of 55 The Lush Report
I'm trying to bring some of the more overlooked stuff from the local music scene. I have to balance it against a full-time real job, so I can't be as thorough as I'd like, but hopefully you'll find some of the stuff that Mark Brown and Ricardo Baca don't cover. If you've got a tip on a great venue for live music or great musicians to check out, e-mail me here. To bookmark this blog, click here.

Highlights from The Urban Citizen Project show
Contributed by: John Zwick, YourHub.com   on 12/3/2007

Members and supporters of the Urban Citizen Project ( story) had their pick of six acts to get their blood pumping at the Oriental Theater on Nov. 30, but two of the standouts came near the very beginning.

Portrait of a Friend ( myspace) continues in the tradition of one-man bands taking abstract band names. It's a trend I can get behind, and the music's just as likable. Northglenn 19-year-old James Egbert pieces together surprisingly good electronic indie pop, especially given how little he's been in the game. His music bounces around in the space between uplifting, sugary pop and some more melancholy. And it's no small feat for one man to hold down the stage of the short, squat Oriental Theater. It's a lot of empty space for one man and his laptop. His performance is still a little rough around the edges, but the kid is really promising.

The big surprise of the night came from barefoot six-piece folk group Paper Bird ( myspace), sporting brass, a banjo, guitar, and three ladies singing in angelic close harmony, like something out of oldschool folk or bluegrass, with gospel tinges. They're hands-down the best live act -- from Denver or from anywhere -- that I've seen in some time.

The show had a taste of stone soup with several musicians from the six bands being directly involved in the Urban Citizen Project class. As getting involved goes, it's a sight more effective than raging against injustices a world away.
