Blog Entry 83 of 93 Charmaine in the city

I've called the Denver area home for more than two
decades now. But this urban/mountain city is still full of surprises. I'll be posting my adventures here, as I explore local eateries, shops and sharing birthday and vacation photos. And once in a while, I'll throw in a music, movie or food review. I hope to keep this blog interactive, so don't be shy to suggest places I should visit. And check it out: I'm on Brendan's List. Rock on!

Ethel's House of Soul closing
Contributed by: Charmaine Robledo/YourHub.com   on 1/28/2008

I had first heard about Ethel's House of Soul closing last week in the Rocky Mountain News. Located in Five Points, the restaurant has been owned by Ethel Allen since 1971. At 75, Allen said she needs to take a break and settle down.

I was fortunate to get to know the Five Points area better when I worked for the Urban Spectrum after college from June 2004 to February 2005. The newspaper's office is located at 25th and Welton, pretty much near the heart of Five Points.

I used to frequent Blackberries, a lounge, ice cream and coffee house at 26th and Washington. I checked out the art exhibits and presentations at Blair-Caldwell Library. I would get sandwiches and tea from Gemini Tea Emporium on 28th and Welton. But, alas, I never had the pleasure of experiencing home-cooked food at Ethel's House of Soul, located at 2622 Welton St.

There are so few establishments anymore that harbor that homey, family feel. The type of food and atmosphere that comforts you and takes you back to a time when life seemed simpler, less hurried. When love was put into the work.

Today, Jan. 28, is the last day Ethel's will be open and I'm pondering whether I can stop by after work and still get a plate of cornbread, collard greens and rice with gravy. Mmmm.

I've never eaten there, Charmain, but it does sound as if we are losing a valuable slice of cultural diversity in the closing of Ethel's. I am sorry to have missed it. I've missed you lately, too!
