Barr Lake State Park hosts summer canoe classes
Contributed by: Barr Lake State Park on 6/18/2008

What:
Do you daydream about leisurely canoeing on cool waters close to home? Then paddle over to Barr Lake State Park for a canoe class in a natural setting. An American Canoe Association certified instructor will teach you basic canoe skills and safety while the park supplies everything you need for the class including the canoe, personal floatation device and paddles. Enjoy yourself this summer by canoeing through Barr Lake's open waters and tree-lined edges.

One-morning canoe classes are offered Saturdays and Sundays, June 28 & 29 and July 12 & 13 and Sunday July 20, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. To register call the Nature Center at 303-659-6005 and at least three days before the scheduled class. Each participant 12-15 years old must be accompanied by a participating adult, and 16-18 year olds must have an adult permission form signed the morning of the class. Class size is limited to 10 people and there is a $15 non-refundable fee per person.

An annual park pass or a $6 day pass is required on each vehicle entering the park and may be purchased at the entrance station. Courses are subject to adverse weather conditions including waves and wind that may lead to an abbreviated or cancelled course. Funding for the class is provided by the Federal Boat Safety Program, which allows the park to keep fees affordable for participants.

Enjoy calm waters and a peaceful, relaxing haven for sailing and canoeing. While boating, enjoy mountain views, jumping fish and waterfowl. Barr Lake is restricted to non-motorized activities and 10 horsepower or less motorboats. There is no boating on the southern half of the lake because it is a wildlife refuge and home to over 350 species of birds. Great blue herons and double-crested cormorants are some of the birds building their nests along the lakeshore. Bald eagles are currently feeding their two young and western grebes, pelicans and wood ducks are a few of the waterfowl spotted on the lake.
