If you want to catch District One City Council member Rick Garcia for a quick chat, check your local coffee shop.

"I try to make my rounds to coffee shops, kind of spread it around a little bit. For one, I like to keep in touch with what's going on, and two, there are a lot of different sets of people that hang out there," he said from his office on April 17.
"I can't go into Sunflower Market and not run into a half-dozen people that I know or worked with," he added.

Garcia, elected in 2003 and the chair of the Neighborhood, Community & Business Revitalization Committee, said the day in the life of a city council member can vary greatly from day to day. Most days of the week are filled with committee meetings, preparation and responding to the roughly 150 e-mails he receives every day from constituents and political players from around the city.

In the free minutes he can find during the week, he is trading chauffeuring duties for his daughters Rosie, 2, and Raquel, 5, with his wife Loretta, an attorney, while trying to sneak in time to go running.

He does have one other hobby.

"This is going to sound weird, but I just drive around. I look around, I see what's going on. If someone calls on an issue, I go and check it out," he said.
