Local artist bringing the arts back to life
Contributed by: Artopia Arts Activist on 6/10/2008

If you attended the recent festivities at Jaz B studios in the Santa Fe Arts District--Art-taneous and June 6th First Friday--one of the first things you probably noticed in the studio was a huge painting of a woman's face. Her eyes may have seemed to invite you in the doors of Jaz B, and you may have come in and even talked to the artist, David Magoun, about the beauty. Magoun is one of Jaz B's featured artists, and will be on display until the end of June.

The son of an opera singer and well-known local doctor, art has been Magoun's passion since he was a small child. "I just had to sketch and draw," he says. "It didn't even matter what it was at first, but I later developed a fascination with faces and what makes them all different." The obsession paid off for him--he won his first art contest at the age of nine, and by the time he was in high school he was already painting and illustrating professionally.

Over the years, Magoun learned to value his abilities even more, and went on to win several awards in sci-fi conventions and events. His work is also proudly displayed in the Ohio Center of Science and Industry--a commissioned piece called "Valles Marineris," seen by millions as it toured the United States for four years. This piece was also used in a presentation commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Viking Mission at the Smithsonian Institute.

Magoun says his favorite medium is acrylic combined with gouache, and he frequently uses an airbrush for some dazzling effects. Magoun enjoys painting black light murals and also excels at digital painting, and appreciates the ease and accuracy of the medium. He is also involved with many arts and television/film organizations including the Children's Museum, Boulder Digital Arts, CFVA (Colorado Film & Video Assoc.), ZAPP, Denver International Film Festival, Art Exchange, and the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs to name a few.

He has enjoyed his time with Jaz B, he says, and hopes to return there some day. "I like it here because it's a bit off Santa Fe, and a little less frenetic. People come in and stay and talk. It makes showing here a little more personal." Magoun says he enjoys talking about art with all the art lovers, and the Santa Fe Art District has increased his following considerably.

David Magoun not only continues to grace us with his beautiful art, but also passes on his knowledge to our youth. Magoun's continual support for the love of the arts has brought him to collaborate with Encore School of the Arts and has generously offered to give a percentage of the proceeds of all sales to Encore. His experience taught him to value his abilities and leave his gifts to the world by encouraging art in others. Through his teaching right here in Denver, Colorado--where he continues to live--David's art will live far into the future
