Close to 100 people turned out for a meeting July 17 to discuss ideas to help revitalize a corridor of Federal Boulevard referred to as "The Boulevard."
"We had a great turnout," said
Carole Vowell
, who sits on the Federal Boulevard Partnership (FBP) board of directors. "It was a great success."
The FBP, formed in 2005, recently has begun work on a 2018 vision to make Federal into northwest Denver's main street. The partnership recently hired a consultant with the Neighborhood Resource Center of Colorado (NRC) to assist FBP in developing a five-year business plan.
"We know this is going to take some time to get what we want out of this," Vowell said. "We're hoping to be on the next major marketing initiative for the city."
The July 17 meeting helped the partnership hone in on some key components of the plan, she said. Attendees at the meeting stressed the need for more mixed-use developments, more funding and community development tools and an integrated multi-modal transportation system.
"I think people want to be able to walk to businesses that are more pedestrian friendly," she said, adding that the ideas will be incorporated into a guiding business plan.
Some of the loftier concepts floated at the meeting included a trolley that would run along Federal, an eye-catching sculpture to be included at the Federal Boulevard-Colfax Avenue interchange and a walking path similar to the River Walk in San Antonio, Texas. Board members stress those ideas are entirely conceptual.
JoAnne Billen
, owner of Perma-Graphics, 1919 Federal Blvd., has worked in the area for more than 30 years. She said everyone who attended the meeting shared at least one goal - to make Federal a safer, cleaner and more livable place to call home.
"I don't what know what we'll actually see developed from this," she said. "I do know one thing though; it's brought the whole community together."
"The Boulevard" corridor served by the FBP is bounded by Sixth Avenue on the south, 52nd Avenue on the north, Clay Street on the east, Irving Street on the west and Bryant Street from Colfax Avenue to 22nd Avenue.
