Tensions rise between Highland bars, neighbors

Councilman Rick Garcia is continuing to try to calm uneasy relations among neighbors near 32nd Avenue and Lowell Boulevard in the West Highland neighborhood.

Garcia has formed a committee of homeowners and bar owners, which will meet for the first time next week.

Efforts have already been made to curtail tension between neighbors who complain about noise, vandalism and unruly bar patrons and bar owners who say it's an urban neighborhood and closing their doors early hurts the bottom line.

In the latest incident Oct. 4, a large brawl from inside Hai Bar spilled out into the street. Gun shots were confirmed, but no weapons or shooting victims were found, according to Denver Police.

The incident prompted the owners to agree to close the doors at 1 a.m. instead of 2 a.m. on the weekend.

You've created a monster, yuppies, and now you have to live with it. But hey, there's always the suburbs! You could try gentrifying Thornton again!
