Tortilla Tussle makes for Masa madness
Contributed by: Jeff Martinez on 3/1/2008

A tortilla tussle broke out in Denver's Globeville neighborhood on Friday, and only one local leader was left standing in the wake of the masa madness.

For demonstrating superior tortilla-rolling talent, Denver's 7 News Anchor Anne Trujillo earned the prestigious Golden Rolling Pin Award during 'Tortillas for Tepeyac'--a fundraiser for local health provider Clinica Tepeyac that drew some 200 clinic supporters to the Stapleton Recreation Center.

Trujillo was part an all-star lineup of local celebrities and community leaders who turned out to tangle for the tortilla crown, including Denver City Councilemembers Judy Montero and Paul Lopez; Starz Entertainment Exec Rebecca Lim; Su Teatro's Executive Artistic Director Tony Garcia; Metro State College Representative Luis Torres; City of Denver officials Lucia Guzman and Anthony Aragon; Entravision exec Mario Carrera; local television host Lindita Torres-Winters; Sister Alicia Cuaron; 9NEWS Vice President Lynne Valencia; and the Denver Post's Joanne Davidson.

They gathered in front of a sellout crowd for the event, which was hosted by the Entravision's Luis Canela and Clinica Tepeyac Board Member Jesse Ogas. Attendees--which included such notables as Hope Salazar, the wife of Colorado Senator Ken Salazar and Denver Auditor Dennis Gallagher--enjoyed a festive fundraiser that featured fresh tortillas, mouthwatering Mexican food and compelling testimonies from the clinic's volunteer medical providers and staff.

As a result, the event raised new awareness along with thousands of dollars for the local clinic, which provides basic health care and health education to more than 18,000 uninsured residents each year.

"This great crowd is helping Clinica Tepeyac continue its care for many of our region's uninsured," said David Lack, executive director. "This community support serves as the lifeline for thousands who would have no place to go for health care and essential health-related services."

And while the staff focused on the tasks at hand, some of the participants already were plotting their strategy for next year.

"I'm gonna take the little tortilla I rolled today and use it as motivation for next year," Councilman Lopez said. "I'm coming back ready to roll."

Founded in 1994 by parishioners of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Clínica Tepeyac provides basic health care and health education to the metro area's uninsured Latinos. Staffed primarily by volunteers, Clínica Tepeyac assists more than 18,000 underserved individuals annually. For more information, visit www.clinicatepeyac.org
