Rangers Drop First Game of East Coast Road Trip to Pfeiffer (N.C.) 18-5

MISENHEIMER, N.C.-- The Regis women's lacrosse team hit the road for their first game of a four-game road swing in North Carolina this weekend. A tough Pfeiffer team scored 13 first half goals on their way to a 18-5 win over the Rangers.

The Falcons jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. Then the Rangers answered cutting the lead to three goals. Cristina Johnson (Fr., Hampstead, Md.) got RU on the board at the 17:29 mark. Just 20 seconds later Julia Ostberg (Jr., Arvada, Colo.) added one more to RU's total.

Unforuntately that was as close as the game would get as the Falcons scored eight goals in the final 14:06 to just one by the Rangers. The other RU goal came at the 7:43 mark this time on a free position shot by senior Amanda Ponzer (St. Louis, Mo.).

In the second half Kelsi Goings (Fr., Castle Rock, Colo.) scored unassisted with 17:01 on the clock. Ponzer then scored her second goal of the game with just over four minutes remaining.

The Rangers held a 14-11 advantage in shots and scored two more goals in the second half. But RU was 0-for-6 on their free-position attempts in the half and just 1-for-9 in the game. The Falcons scored on six of their 10 free-position shots.

The Rangers will continue action in North Carolina as they take on St. Andrew's Presbyterian tomorrow at 1:00 pm.

Rangers Fall to St. Andrew's Presbyterian 15-13

MISENHEIMER, N.C.-- The Regis women's lacrosse team got off to a strong start as they outscored St. Andrew's 8-7 in the first half. However, the second half was won by the Knights as they outscored RU 8-5 to squeak out the 15-13 victory.

The Rangers jumped out to an early 3-1 lead. Channi Taggart (Fr., Boise, Id.) scored her first collegiate goal at the 24:34 mark. Seniors Lillian Yanni (Vernon Hills, Ill.) and Amanda Ponzer (St. Louis, Mo.) tallied goals as well.

The game was tied on three separate occasions in the first half. However, RU took back the lead when Kelsi Goings (Fr., Castle Rock, Colo.) scored on a free-position shot with just 32 seconds left in the half.

The second half belonged to the Knights as they came out in the second half scoring five consecutive goals in the first nine minutes.

Ponzer cut the deficit to three goals at 12-9 with 18:29 remaining in the half. Another goal by St. Andrew's put them back up by four and RU answered when Jen Gunlikson scored at the 14:46 mark to put the Rangers within three goals.

RU found themselves down by four after another Knight goals and after over nine minutes of scoreless action Yanni scored back-to-back goals to pull the Rangers within two.

Yanni's second goal came with 4:27 remaining but just 11 seconds later the Knights scored once more. Gunlikson added her second goal of the day cutting the lead to 15-13 with 3:41 remaining. The Knights were able to hold off the Rangers down the stretch.

Yanni paced the Rangers with four goals, seven ground balls and five caused turnovers. Ponzer, Gunlikson, Taggart and Goings each scored two goals a piece. Becca Gargaro (So., Littleton, Colo.) scored one goal.

The Rangers will travel to Charlotte, N.C. for a game with Queens University on Thursday, March 6 at 4:00 pm.

Rangers Get Off to a Slow Start; Fall to Queen's University (N.C.) 12-5

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- The Ranger women's lacrosse team got off to a slow start against Queen's University (N.C.) as they were outscored 8-2 in the first half. RU tallied three goals in the second half and held the Royals to just four scores as the Rangers fell 12-5.

The Royals jumped out to an early lead as they scored the first six goals of the game. RU's two goals came late in the first half. The first by Lillian Yanni (Sr., Vernon Hills, Ill.) with 7:23 remaining and the second by Christina Johnson (Fr., Hampstead, Md.) with 28 seconds left on the assist from Maria Heilner (Fr., Steamboat Springs, Colo.).

In the second half Kelsi Goings (Fr., Castle Rock, Colo.) and Jen Gunlikson (Sr., Littleton, Colo.) tallied their first goals of the game. Johnson added her second goal of the game.

Ashley Beauchemin (Jr., Castle Rock, Colo.) had a strong game with 12 ground balls and four caused turnovers.

RU had many chances in the game finishing with an advantage in shots 29-24 and were 1-for-10 on their free-position attempts.

The Rangers finish their road trip in North Carolina tomorrow with a game against Belmont Abbey at 3:00 pm.

Rangers Drop a Close Game to Belmont Abbey 16-12

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- The Rangers got off to a strong start and had a one goal lead at 9-8 at the half. In the second half of play Belmont Abbey came out firing outscoring the Rangers 8-3 to earn the 16-12 win.

RU got on the board early with goals by Lillian Yanni (Sr., Vernon Hills, Ill.) and Amanda Ponzer (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) to grab the 2-1 lead.

Back-to-back goals by the Crusaders put them up 3-2 but the Rangers answered with three straight recapturing the lead at 5-3. Yanni and Ponzer tallied their second goals of the game, Ponzer's on a free-position shot. Channi Taggart (Fr., Boise, Id.) scored during the Rangers streak as well, her second goal of the season.

RU scored four more goals in the half to grab the lead. The Rangers converted on four of their six free position attempts in the half. Jen Gunlikson (Sr., Littleton, Colo.) and Becca Gargaro (So., Littleton, Colo.) scored goals. Yanni added her third goal of the half on a free position shot and Kelsi Goings (Fr., Castle Rock, Colo.) gave RU the lead on a goal with just two seconds left.

In the second half of play Gunlikson scored with 27:35 on the clock on the assist from Ponzer. After that goal RU was held in check not finding the net again for over 16 minutes. During the Rangers scoring drought Belmont Abbey scored six straight goals.

The Crusaders finished the game with 45 shots to 28 by the Rangers. They also controlled the defensive end collecting 34 ground balls while RU picked up 26 in the game.

Jen Gunlikson scored a season-high four goals and collected four ground balls. Lillian Yanni tallied three goals while Amanda Ponzer added two goals and two assists.

The Rangers return to Colorado for their home opener against Colorado State University on Thursday, March 13 at 3:30 pm.

Rangers Split Doubleheader with Metro State

DENVER, Colo.-- The Ranger softball team split a doubleheader with crosstown-rival Metro State. In game one RU's bats came alive starting in the bottom of the third to pull out the 9-4 win. In game two Metro State had big sixth and seventh innings and held off the Rangers for the 8-6 win.

In the bottom of the third inning patience at the plate paid off for the Rangers. RU's first two batters drew walks followed by a Lindsey Witty sacrifice bunt (So., Frederick, Colo.) and a fielder's choice by Alisa Heronema (Fr., Berthoud, Colo.) to load the bases. Metro pitcher Jessica Fischer issued her third walk of the inning and the Rangers were up 1-0. A throwing error and an RBI single by Jacki Martinez (Jr., Arvada, Colo.) added three more runs.

RU scored three in the fourth with a single by Heronema and two RBI single by Christine Gardella (Sr., Arvada, Colo.). MSCD cut the lead 7-4 with four runs in the top of the fifth but the Rangers took the lead back for good with two more runs.

An RBI single by Witty and patience at the plate by Heronema with the bases loaded brought in another Ranger run. In the game the Rangers drew eight walks which scored two runs.

In game two both teams got on the board in the fourth inning. The Roadrunners started the first with a Molly Clark solo shot to left field. RU came right back scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Doubles by Mo McDaniel (So., Fort Collins, Colo.) and Amber Sivetts (Sr., Lakewood, Colo.) drove in three Ranger runs. Sivetts then came into score on one of the Roadrunners five errors in game two.

Metro tied the game at four with another home run this time a three-run shot by Nicole Lyles. The Rangers took the lead back next time up with an Heronema single.

In the top of the seventh the Roadrunners did their biggest damage as they scored four runs. A two-out RBI double by McDaniel in the bottom of the seventh gave the Rangers life once again but RU came up short with a ground out to end the game.

Alisa Heronema was 3-for-7 on the day with two runs scored and three RBIs. Christine Gardella and Amber Aragon-Autobee were both 2-for-5 and Gardella drove in three runs. Mo McDaniel collected two hits, both doubles and had four RBIs in two games.

The Rangers will be at home this weekend for a four-game series with CSU-Pueblo that begins on Saturday, March 8th at 12:00 pm.

Rangers Split Two-Game Series with CSU-Pueblo

DENVER, Colo.-- The Regis softball team played two very different games today. Game one was a pitcher's duel as both teams struggled offensively and Pueblo came out on top 2-1 in 11 innings. In game two RU's bat propelled them to the win with five runs in the third earning them the 6-3 victory.

The Rangers only run in game one came off the bat of Amber Sivetts (Sr., Lakewood, Colo.). She cranked a solo shot over the center field wall in the fourth to give the Rangers the lead.

The Thunderwolves tied the game at one in the top of the seventh on a solo shot to center by Bo Nuanez. Regis was not able to recapture the lead in the bottom of the inning and the game continued all the way to the 11th inning.

Pueblo started the 11th inning with a single by Janine Tyler. Tyler stole second and advanced to third on a ground ball. Relief pitcher Amber Higby would then hit a two-out single to center field that scored the winning run for the Thunderwolves.

The Rangers had many opportunities to blow the game wide open as they finished the game with 17 runners left on base and were 0-for-3 with the bases loaded and 0-5 with a runner on third base.

Kaitlyn Gentert (Sr., Berthoud, Colo.) pitched all 11 innings for the Rangers striking out seven batters and walking just one.

In game two the Rangers took control from the beginning as they scored a run in the first on an RBI single by Jamie Winsor (Fr., Fort Collins, Colo.).

However, it was the third inning that helped the Rangers to a win. RU rattled off five straight hits to begin the inning including perfect bunts by Alisa Heronema (Fr., Berthoud, Colo.) and Christine Gardella (Sr., Arvada, Colo.) to load the bases. Winsor followed with a two-RBI double and Jacki Martinez (Jr., Arvada, Colo.) with an RBI single to to give the Rangers the 4-1 lead. Sivetts added to the Rangers total with a single and Witty was hit by a pitch that brought in the fifth run of the inning.

Pueblo gave the Rangers a scare in the top of the fourth scoring two runs to get within in three run but Bianca Holley (Fr., Arvada, Colo.) came in to the game to pitch in relief and ended their comeback.

Holley allowed no runs on two hits in 3 and 2/3 innings of work as she struck out three batters. Sara Baumbereger (Arvada, Colo.) started the game for the Rangers and pitched 3 and 1/3 innings as she allowed two hits and struck out three.

Four Rangers were .500 on the day. Alisa Heronema collected five hits and stole one base. Jamie Winsor finished with four hits, a double and three RBIs. Lindsey Witty had three hits and one stole base. Amber Sivetts rounded it out with a home run and two RBIs.

The win improves the Rangers record to 11-8 overall and 4-2 in the RMAC. They will be in action again tomorrow against CSU-Pueblo for another doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11 am.

Rangers Hot Then Cold in a Split with CSU-Pueblo

DENVER, Colo.-- The Rangers were on and then off as they blew CSU-Pueblo away in game one 12-0. In game two RU cooled off significantly as they had just four hits and fell 4-1. RU split the weekend series with the Thunderwolves and are now 12-9 overall and 5-3 in the RMAC.

Alisa Heronema (Fr., Berthoud, Colo.) started things off in game one with a triple, her fourth of the season. Christine Gardella (Sr., Arvada, Colo.) followed with a single scoring Heronema. A two-run shot by Amber Sivetts (Sr., Lakewood, Colo.) her third of the season pushed the Ranger lead to 3-0.

In the third RU lit up CSU-Pueblo pitcher Kelsey Swanberg scoring nine runs. Gardella sent one over the wall in left for her third home run of the season. A Jamie Winsor (Fr., Fort Collins, Colo.) single followed by three straight walks added another Ranger run and kept the bases load with one out.

Two more Ranger hits by Mo McDaniel (So., Fort Collins, Colo.) and Amber Aragon-Autobee (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) scored runs. The fourth walk of the inning scored another run. A new pitcher did not slow down the Rangers as they rattled off three consecutive hits capped off by a two-RBI single by Winsor before the end of the inning.

The Rangers cruised winning the game in five innings as Kaitlyn Gentert (Sr., Berthoud, Colo.) pitched her second shutout of the season and the 15th in her career. She allowed just four hits, struck out two and walked no batters.

In game two the Rangers went cold at the plate as they managed just four hits and one run in the loss. RU's lone run came in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Jacki Martinez (Jr., Arvada, Colo.).

Bianca Holley (Fr., Arvada, Colo.) pitched all seven innings for the Rangers allowing four runs on six hits while striking out five batters.

Mo McDaniel had a solid day at the plate going 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Christine Gardella was also 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs.

The Rangers hit the road next weekend as they take on New Mexico Highlands on Saturday, March 15th in a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
