Regis Baseball Splits Two with Colorado Christian; Anthony Musielak Allows Only Two Hits

Denver, Colo.: The Regis baseball team split two games with Colorado Christian today losing the first game 8-7 and winning the second game 14-1.

The Rangers are the visiting team this weekend due to the fact that the Cougars do not have a home field to play on. The Rangers committed four errors which led to four unearned runs. The Cougars jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four innings. The Rangers scored two runs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-2.

The Cougars got those two runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Rangers responded by scoring three runs in the top of the seventh inning. They collected four hits after the second out, but they only had one hit the rest of the game with two outs. They scored two of the runs with two outs one on successive singles by Aaron Salvucci and Curtis Hornaday.

Regis scored two runs in the top of the ninth, but with the bases loaded and no outs Etienne Materre popped to shortstop and the Rangers tried to catch the Cougars sleeping by sending Anthony Musielak from third. The Cougars, however, were able to get Musielak out at the plate. Mike Khouri grounded out to secure the win for Colorado Christian.

The Rangers were able to pound out 14 hits, two each by Mike Khouri, Max Regalado, who snapped a 0-12 slump, Peter Whatley and Curtis Hornaday.

Gerard Mohrmann got the "hard luck" loss as he only allowed three earned runs in six innings while striking out five Cougar hitters.

The second game was very different as the Rangers scored four runs in the first inning and five more in the second inning to take a commanding lead.

The highlight in the first inning was a three-run double by Dan Kozloski. Max Regalado's two-run double in the second inning helped the Rangers to their second big inning.

The Cougars lone run came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore Anthony Musielak pitched a gem of a game. He threw a complete game, allowing just one earned run on just two hits to pick up his third win of the season against just one loss.

Dan Kozloski was a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, while Max Regalado, Chris Steinbeck and Etienne Materre each chipped in with two hits. Steinbeck and Kozloski each crossed the plate three times.

The Rangers are now 14-11 overall and 10-7 in the RMAC. The two teams will play two more games tomorrow at the Regis Baseball Field.

Regis Baseball Pound Out 43 Hits in Two Wins Over Colorado Christian

Denver, Colo.: The Regis Rangers took two today from Colorado Christian with the help of great hitting. The Rangers pounded out 43 hits in the two games winning 25-15 and 18-8.

Going into the top of the fourth inning, the Rangers led by a slim 9-8 margin. They then erupted for nine runs to take a commanding 18-8 run and cruised to the 25-15 win.

The Rangers collected 28 hits including four each by Chris Steinbeck, Jordan Bruns and Curtis Hornaday. Eight Ranger hitters collected at least three hits each. Steinbeck and Etienne Materre drove in five runs each, while Stephen Hanson chipped in with four RBI.

Dan Kozloski picked up his fifth win of the season striking out five in three innings.

The second game was much the same, as the Rangers collected at least two runs in each of the first five innings inlcuding a six-run salvo in the second inning.

The Rangers collected 15 hits with Dan Kozloski going a perfect 3-for-3 in the game with five RBI. Curtis Hornaday also had a perfect game with three hits in as many at bats with four RBI. Etienne Materre and Jordan Bruns also had three hits for the Rangers.

Brennan Bonati picked up his second win of the season going five innings and striking out three and allowing only two earned runs.

The Rangers, who lead the NCAA Division II in hitting, hit .443 against the Cougars in the four-game series and are now batting .390 on the season.

The Rangers improve to 16-11 overall and 12-7 in the RMAC. The Rangers host New Mexico Highlands next weekend in the final home series of the weekend. The first game is on Friday and first pitch is set for 3 pm at the Regis Baseball Field.

Rangers Suffer First Half Offensive Drought in a 20-8 Loss to Gannon (Pa.)

ERIE, Pa.-- The Regis women's lacrosse team found themselves in the game with #7 ranked Gannon (Pa.) University. Gannon scored the first two goals as the Rangers answered tying the game at 2-2 with 23:53 left in the first half.

After Maria Heilner tied the game at two the Golden Knights took control and never looked back in route to a 20-8 victory. Gannon finished the first half with 10 unanswered goals.

The Rangers were held scoreless for over 30 minutes as they score their next goal with 22:25 remaining in the game on a goal by Julia Ostberg on the assist from Lillian Yanni.

Despite falling behind 12-2 in the first half RU rallied and kept the game close in the second half scoring six goals.

The Golden Knights held a significant advantage in shots attempting 32 as the Rangers recorded 18 shots. Gannon controlled also controlled the game in the midfield collecting 28 ground balls to 13 for the Rangers.

Maria Heilner scored three goals and tallied three assists. Julia Ostberg added two more goals. Jen Gunlikson added two assists. Brittany Farniok and Erin Lewis both spent time in goal and Lewis made six saves.

The Rangers remain in Pennsylvania as they take on Notre Dame (Ohio) on Saturday, March 29th at 3:30 pm (EST).

Ranger Comeback Fall Shorts in a Close Contest with Notre Dame (Ohio)

ERIE, Pa.-- The Regis University lacrosse team found themselves in a close contest with Notre Dame (Ohio). The Rangers scored three unanswered goals late in the second period to decrease their deficit to just one. Unfortunately it was as close as RU got thanks to impressive work in goal by Kylie Flett who made 14 saves in the game to hold on for the 11-10 victory.

The Falcons led the entire first period but the Rangers kept it close with a Becca Gargaro free position shot with 5:50 remaining in the period.

The game remained close as both teams traded goals to begin the first seven minutes of the second period. After Maria Heilner pulled RU within one goal with 23:04 on the clock the Falcons made a run.

Three straight NDC goals widened the gap to 11-7 with just under 20 minutes left in the game. The Rangers answered quickly with goals by Lillian Yanni, Jen Gunlikson and Kelsi Goings.

Goings goal was the final Regis goal which came with just under 12 minutes remaining in the game. After that neither team was able to find the net and the Falcons held on for the win.

RU had multiple contributions on the offensive end. Kelsi Goings, Maria Heilner, Jen Gunlikson and Kelsi Goings each scored two goals. Lillian Yanni added one goal and two assists while Becca Gargaro scored one goal.

The Rangers head to Greensburg, Pa. for the final game of their road trip tomorrow, April 30th against Seton Hill at 12:00 pm (EST).

Regis Lacrosse Earns First Win of the Season; Pummels Seton Hill 20-4


GREENSBURG, Pa.-- The Regis University lacrosse team has found themselves in some close games and come up short but against Seton Hill today that was not the case. The Rangers dominated every statistical category in route to their first win of the season 20-4 over Seton Hill.

The Griffins scored the first goal just 1:24 into the game but the Rangers answered with 10 unanswered goals.

In the second period tough defense kept Seton Hill in check. The Griffins scored just one goal and managed just four shots. In the entire game the recorded just 12 shots compared to 40 for the Rangers.

RU opened the second period with six straight goals pushing their lead up to 14. The Rangers added three more in the final 3:40 to finish the game with a season high 20 goals.

Jen Gunlikson recorded her second five goal game of the season. Gunlikson also tallied an assist and five draw controls in the win.

Nine other Rangers scored goals as well. Kelsi Goings and Maria Heilner added three goals a piece, Heilner also added an assist. Lillian Yanni and Amanda Ponzer each scored a pair of goals. Ashley Beauchemin, Cristina Johnson, Julia Ostber, Becca Gargaro and Channi Taggart all scored in the game as well.

Brittany Farniok earned her first win in the net for the Rangers playing 50 minutes and making three saves.

The Rangers will hit the road once again as they travel to New York for a pair of games. Their first game on Friday, April 18th is against Adelphi University at 7:00 (EST).

Regis Men's Soccer Signs Six Outstanding Student-Athletes for Fall 2008

Denver, Colo.: Regis University head men's soccer coach Keith Tiemeyer has announced that five high school seniors and one Division I transfer have signed with Regis to continue their academic and athletic careers. Tiemeyer announced that Ben Sabados, Kyle Reddy, James Martinez, Kyle Emge, and Patrick Freeman have signed their National Letter of Intent to attend Regis, while Gary Cole will be transferring from the University of Vermont.

Ben Sabados, a goalkeeper from Broomfield, Colo., helped lead his time to a 57-2-1 record during his career including two state championships. Broomfield completed the 2007 season with a perfect 20-0 record with a 1-0 overtime victory over Mullen in the Colorado 4A?State Championship game. In 2007, he made 85 saves and was named the Boulder Daily Camera Player of the Year. He was also named all-conference, all-western region and Denver Post Class 4A All-State Honorable Mention.

Kyle Reddy, a forward/midfielder, joined Sabados on Broomfield's two state championship teams. In his career he amassed 37 goals and 28 assists. He was named all-conference, all-state honorable mention and all-region second team his junior season. During his senior campaign he helped lead his team to a perfect 20-0 season, while garnering Denver Post Class 4A First-Team All-State honors.

James Martinez, a defender from Lakewood, Colo., led Golden High School to a 13-3-1 record as a senior scoring eight goals and tallying three assists. He is a two-time first team all-conference and all-state selection. He also led his team to the State Cup Championship three times.

Kyle Emge, a midfielder/forward from Rocky Mountain High School, is a two-time first team all-conference selection. He led the Fort Collins Arsenal to a state championship and was a semi-finalist at the Far West Regional's.

Patrick Freeman, a forward from Wheat Ridge, Colo., scored 45 career goals at Wheat Ridge High School. A four time letter winner he led the Jeffco Conference 5A in scoring his senior season. As a freshman he earned honorable mention all-conference honors and was named to the second team as sophomore and the first team as a junior. He was twice named offensive most valuable player as a sophomore and a junior. Freeman was a member of the state Olympic Development team and attended the Region IV camp for three years. He was also a part of the Colorado Rapids Academy in 2008.

Gary Cole, a defender who transferred from the University of Vermont, played his high school soccer at Arapahoe High School. At Vermont he played in 11 games and made seven starts for the Catamounts. In 2006 he was named the Continental League Player of the Year. He was also named to the Denver Post All-Colorado Team, the All-Rocky Mountain team and was an all-state selection that same year. While at Arapahoe High School he was a three-time all-conference selection as well.

The Rangers finished the season with a 11-7-1 record and finished their season with a 2-0 first round loss in the RMAC tournament under first year head coach Keith Tiemeyer. This marked the first time since 2002 that the Rangers have qualified for the RMAC postseason tournament.

Softball Splits in Two Close Contests with Metro State

DENVER, Colo.-- The Ranger softball team headed into today's doubleheader with Metro State in a tight race for the RMAC title and with a split the race remains close. RU struggled offensively in game one with just five hits in a 6-3 loss. In game two the Rangers produced runs down the stretch to split the series with a 7-5 victory.

The Roadrunners held RU scoreless through the first four innings while Metro State combined to score five runs in the third and fourth innings. The Roadrunners added their first runs with a two-run shot in the third and loaded the bases early in the fourth to score three more.

All of the Rangers runs were a result of home runs. Christine Gardella hit a two run shot in the fifth inning while Mo McDaniel hit her 6th home run in nine games in the sixth.

Game two went back and forth as each team scored two runs in the first inning. Christine Gardella hit her second home run of the day, another two run shot to give RU the early lead. A walk and sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning tied the game.

Metro took the lead with a solo shot in the bottom of the second and RU took their first lead with a two-run top of the third. Chelsie Rademacher and Jacki Martinez doubled and gave the Rangers the one run lead.

The Roadrunners recaptured the lead in the bottom of the inning with another home run but their offense did no more damage after that as Bianca Holley was practially unhittable. In the final four innings Holley gave up just one hit to earn the win and struck out five batters.

RU offense did their job down the stretch scoring a run in the sixth to tie the game and scored two in the top of the seventh to take the lead. A double by Mo McDaniel in the sixth scored one while Tasha Garza came in to score on a error and Christine Gardella added one more with an RBI single to center field.

Clinging to a two run lead Holley made quick work of the next three Metro State batters as all three grounded out to end the game.

Christine Gardella powered the Ranger offense in the two-game series as she was 3-for-7 with three runs scored, two home runs and five RBIs.

The Rangers play host to Nebraska-Kearney this weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 29th, first pitch is set for 12:00 pm.

Errors in Game Two Leads to a Split with Nebraska-Kearney

DENVER, Colo.-- The Regis University's softball team played catch up in their two games with the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers. In the first game the Rangers won 4-3 in extra innings. The Rangers mounted a comeback late in game two but were plagued by errors in a 7-4 loss.

Christine Gardella gave RU the lead in the bottom of the third in game one as she hit a home run for the third straight game, this time a two-run shot. The Lopers took the lead scoring three runs in the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh the Rangers tied the game at three to force extra innings. Amber Sivetts started the inning with a single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt by Tasha Garza and a ground out by Bianca Holley put Sivetts on third with two outs. Speedy Alisa Heronema followed with an RBI single scoring Sivetts and tying the game.

Kaitlyn Gentert made quick work of UNK in the top of the eighth and RU took care of business in the bottom of the inning. A error and back-to-back walks loaded the bases with just one out. Amber Sivetts battled at the plate and with a full count was hit by a pitch allowing the winning run to come in and score.

Kaitlyn Gentert earned the win as she pitched all eight innings allowing three runs, just one earned as she struck out four batters.

The Lopers took advantage of Ranger miscues in game two. In the second inning UNK scored despite recording a hit as a result of a Ranger error.

In the third two more Ranger errors helped increase the Loper lead to 3-0. UNK added one more in the fourth inning before the Rangers added a run in the bottom of the inning.

Christine Gardella led off the bottom of the fourth with a well hit triple as the left fielder went all the way to the warning track. Chelsie Rademacher's RBI double gave RU their first run.

Four hits and anothe Ranger error helped the Lopers to score three runs in the fith inning. The Rangers were shutout in both the fifth and the sixth but Sara Baumberger pitched two scoreless innings in relief giving RU a chance in the bottom of the seventh.

Jacki Martinez's solo shot, her second of the season, started it off. Three consecutive hits which included an RBI bunt single by Lindsey Witty kept the rally alive. The Rangers found themselves down to their last out with the bases loaded after Amber Aragon-Autobee was hit by a pitch. Christine Gardella took one for the team allowing another run to score. Unfortunately the Rangers luck ran out as their final batter fouled out to the catcher.

Lindsey Witty and Amber Sivetts were both 2-for-5 with an RBI. Christine Gardella was 2-for-7 with a triple, a home run and three RBIs.

The Rangers finish their series with Nebraska-Kearney tomorrow as they play another doubleheader, first pitch of game one is scheduled for 11:00 am.

Regis Softball Crushes Kearney for a Sunday Sweep

DENVER, Colo.-- After a split on Saturday the Rangers bounced back in convincing fashion scoring 21 runs and pounding out 23 hits in their two wins. UNK grabbed the lead in the top of the first in both games but the Rangers only got better as the innings went on.

The Lopers managed just one run in the first game beginning the game with three straight singles and fielder's choice to score a run.

Back-to-back shots by Mo McDaniel and Jacki Martinez jump started the Rangers in the second inning. Amber Aragon-Autobee drew a walk and Christine Gardella singled adding to RU's lead.

Patience at the plate paid off the the fifth. Christine Gardella got on base and stole second while the next two batters drew walks to load the bases. Amber Sivetts followed with a single down the left field line scoring one run. Lindsey Witty finished the inning with single to right field giving the Rangers a 7-1 lead as they ran away with game two.

Kearney came out swinging in game two as they scored five runs on four hits in the first inning but on this day the Rangers were not to be denied.

RU answered right back with five runs of their own in the bottom of the first. A Mo McDaniel single scored both Amber Aragon-Autobee and Christine Gardella with two outs. Jacki Martinez kept the inning alive with a double. In the next at bat Amber Sivetts crushed a shot to left field tying the game at five.

After that timely hitting and clutch pitching by Bianca Holley helped the Rangers finish the Lopers off in six innings.

Three straight walks to begin the fourth and a sacrifice fly by Mo McDaniel gave the Rangers the lead for the first time. RU added an insurance run with a single by Jacki Martinez to make the score 7-5.

However, the Rangers did not want another close game or to have to play catch as they finished UNK off in the bottom of the six by scoring six runs.

A three up, three down seemed inevitable but two errors by the UNK shortstop proved to be costly. Amber Sivetts made the Lopers pay again with her second three-run home run of the game. The Rangers did not stop there as the next five batters all reached base with hits including a triple by Tasha Garza.

Kaitlyn Gentert earned the win in game one giving up just five hits and one run to improve to 10-5 on the season. In game two Bianca Holley came into pitch in the second inning and was unstoppable. She pitched a six inning shutout to improve to 6-4 on the season allowing just four hits.

Christine Gardella hit .714 on the day with five hits, four runs scored, three RBIs and two stolen bases. Jacki Martinez found her stride as she was 4-for-6 on the day with a double, a home run, four runs scored and four RBIs. Amber Sivetts hit two home runs and collected seven RBIs.

Regis hits the road for three consecutive weeks as they take on Chadron State. The Rangers play a doubleheader against the Eagles on Saturday, April 5th, first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
