WHAT:
Swallow Hill Music is pleased to to present banjo master Béla Fleck for a banjo styles workshop, African Banjo.
Mr. Fleck recently made the film, "Throw Down Your Heart," as a feature documentary of his musical adventures through four African countries: Uganda, Tanzania, Gambia and Mali. Along the way he worked with a wide array of musicians from local villages, from performers who play a 12-foot xylophone to a family that makes and plays the akonting (thought by many to be the original banjo), and with international superstars such as the Malian diva, Oumou Sangare.
Mr. Fleck will share his experiences from this journey, demonstrate those ideas in several songs from his regions of travel and answer questions about his approach to the banjo and his career. Participants should be able to play the banjo at a beginner to intermediate level. Observers and other musicians welcome, but this workshop is for the banjo.
The
$75 workshop ticket includes education materials, intimate seating, the ability to bring in your banjo/instrument, the opportunity to ask questions and meet with Béla Fleck.
Observer seating is available for $20. Observer seating is reserved behind the workshop in our concert hall with a great view of the event. Observers need to purchase a workshop ticket if they would like to bring an instrument, receive handouts, ask questions and meet with Béla Fleck.
