Blog Entry 100 of 129 Gladys Mercier, Arvada.
I like living in Arvada.I am a member of Trinity Baptist Church and have many good friends there.I lived in the same house in Denver until I married, so as you can see, I am a native. My husband and I adopted 2 Korean sons who are now adults, 1 is a State Patrol Sgt., the other is an upholsterer. My husband died Sept.1st,2005. My family is a real blessing to me.I will probably write most about them, especially my great grandchildren (3)

Mrs. Doubleday
Contributed by: Gladys Mercier   on 1/25/2008

I read an article in the paper this morning that showed a sod house that has been built on the eastern plains in Colorado for some event.
This took me back to a dear sweet lady that Bob and I got aquainted with at our church when we were first married.

Now, I am not old enough to have lived in a sod house, even if I do look it sometimes but Mrs. Doubleday had lived in one. Her family came west in a covered wagon and homesteaded on the Colorado prairie. She told us how her father built this sod house and how warm it was in the winter and cool in the summer.

The floor of the house was dirt but she said it became so packed down that it could be swept like a linoleum floor. She had only good memories of living there.
Eventually she came to Denver and lived to a ripe old age in my neighborhood, Swansea.

Mrs. Doubleday learned that Bob loved homemade noodles and since I had no idea how to make them, She would invite us over for Sunday dinner about once a month. Her noodles were delicious and so were her stories of traveling west and of the experiences she had living on the prairie in that sod house.
We were disappointed when she had to move to a nursing home as age caught up with her but she always remained that same sweet lady we knew and enjoyed so much.

She has passed on but her life lives on in my memory. She was a beautiful lady.

Gladys - I visited a "reproduction" sod house...very small, but quite homey, this one had a wood floor and wood on the inside walls that was whitewashed. Tiny windows and doors...

Mrs. Doubleday sounds like a wonderful lady Gladys. My Mom makes homemade noodles. She rolls them out with a rolling pin, cuts them in thin strips with a sharp knife, and lays them to dry all over her kitchen counters. She wouldn't hear of using a pasta maker.
