HubCap: Remember the mix tape?
Contributed by: Brendan Leonard/YourHub.com   on 2/6/2007

I am too old for the iPod phone, but not for the iPod. I am not old enough to remember 8-tracks, but did listen to the Beach Boys for the first time on my dad's turntable. I recently spoke to my insurance agent about whether my renter's insurance would cover the loss of my 1,300-some albums housed on my computer.

I used to make mix CDs. A lot of them. I don't anymore. Maybe I have less spare time than I used to, but I suspect it's because I'm not as intimate with my music as I was when I was a teenager, saving money from my busboy job to get the newest Pearl Jam album, then reading the lyrics and the liner notes over and over during the three hours I spent listening to the album on repeat. Now, I have too much music, and almost no liner notes. There are dozens of albums on my computer I haven't listened to yet.

Before the mix CDs were the mix tapes, which I haven't thought about in a long time, until I read Ann Himel's column on them today. Mix tapes were great, and anybody too young to have ever made one is sincerely missing a chunk of musical soul.

To paraphrase High Fidelity's Rob Gordon, there's an art to making a proper mix tape. A correctly formulated mix tape sends a message. Mostly, my mixtapes sent the message that

a) Classic rock is the best music to listen to while driving OR drinking
b) In the correct order, hip hop, reggae, punk and then "alternative" rock can all get along
c) Bob Dylan's "Tangled Up In Blue" is the French fries of the mix tape music menu -- not always the main course, but goes well with just about everything

Ann made her first mix CD the other day, and she details it in her latest column, which made me wish I had some of my old mix tapes back. And my old S10 pickup with the cassette deck. And my youth...OK, then.

Here are some other music-related postings, for when you're done reading Ann's. And here's a link to a video of Mr. Dylan playing "Tangled Up In Blue" in 1975.

- Erin DiPaolo has been taking advantage of unlimited downloads from MP3Rocket to listen to artists she's never considered before. Like Tupac, whom she's not a big fan of.

- John Zwick breaks the sad news that local rocker (crooner?) Melissa Ivey has broken up the band for a gig as the voice of a cartoon in Spain. Sigh.

-Local (British ex-pat) punker Ben Simkins, of AKA Charlie Brown, shares with us the story of how he met and fell in love with a local girl. There's a happy ending.

If you've got an ultimate mix tape song, please say so in the comment box below.

My first Christmas present to Damon was a mixed tape of my favorite music for when we drove around in his car. He only has a cassette player, so we do a lot of mixed tapes.

I remember making mix tapes back in 1988. I even edited to keep the beat going (much like the acidhouse music we were used to dancing to). You could easily segue from Yaz, "Don't Go" to "Bizarre Love Triangle" without breaking a batcaver beat. Mix tapes rule!
