Tupper True's granddaugher visits Steele School

Steele Elementary was paid a special visit Monday by Victoria Tupper Kirby, granddaughter of Colorado muralist Allen Tupper True. Ms. Kirby is on a book tour to promote her biography of her grandfather, Allen Tupper True: An American Artist.

Steele is home to a mural Mr. True painted around 1930, and which Ms. True recently discovered was here. The mural depicts bucolic seaside scenes with children playing. The mural adorns the walls of a kindergarten classroom, and may have been painted as part of a large renovation that gave Steele its current Art Deco façade.

A large exhibit of Allen True's works goes on display Friday, Oct. 2. It will be on display at the Denver Public Library's Central branch, Colorado History Museum, and the Denver Art Museum until March 28, 2010. Ms. Kirby will be at the Tattered Cover Bookstore Wednesday, Sept. 29 to sign her book.
