Parks and Rec outdoor movie to benefit needy kids

Enjoy the movie Jurassic Park under the stars and help underprivileged kids' start the school year right with supplies

Denver, August 4, 2009- On Friday, August 7, Denver Parks and Recreation and Denver Botanic Gardens, will show the family favorite movie, Jurassic Park, at Cheesman Park as part of this summer's Movies in the Park series.

The movie is a perfect complement to the Denver Botanic Gardens current exhibit, Jurassic Gardens, which explores plant and animal relationships of prehistoric times. Guest to the Gardens can view life-sized and realistic dinosaurs, and children can play in a dinosaur dig site designed just for them.

Patrons are asked to bring new school supplies to the event to support the Denver Department of Human Services' (DDHS) Annual School Supply Drive. The school supplies collected at the event will be given to 3,000 homeless, foster and underprivileged youth the week before school begins.

The supply drive, supported completely by donations, helped over 2,700 youth last year in Denver. Patrons can drop off donations at the white tents at the park.

"School supplies are essential to helping create the right learning environment in the classroom," Mayor John Hickenlooper said. "This year, more than ever because of the economic downturn, we need individuals and businesses to rise to the challenge and donate supplies to help these kids be successful learners."

Located at 9th & York, the Gardens is considered one of the top botanical gardens in the United States and a pioneer in water conservation. The Gardens' dynamic, 23-acre urban oasis in the heart of the city is now in its 50th year, offering unforgettable opportunities to flourish with unique garden experiences for the whole family - as well as world-class education and plant conservation research programs.
