Reader: YourHub.com a waste

Editor:

Ho Hum. That is exactly what I think of this so-called journalism that really resembles a student newspaper - and that is to denigrate the student paper.

This is an incredible waste of trees, paper, staff and advertising dollars. If the News has excess advertising dollars, perhaps it could expand the book review section since some of us would like to know about current literature instead of whose dog is cute or who likes to eat what. In the south-central part of Denver we have a REAL paper. It's called the WASHINGTON PARK PROFILE.

Sincerely,

Marsha Phillips
Denver

Know what Marsha does when she doesn't know the words to a song? Ho Hum. You know since we're like a high school paper and all, I thought I'd go with something sophomoric. According to dictionary.com, that means not only immature, but also intellectually pretentious, overconfident, and conceited. How apropos. That means pertinent, by the way, Marsha. Hey Kate, why don't your share your opinion with a "real paper". Oh yeah; they won't print it. Nice to have a voice, huh, quality girl. You just don't seem to get that you could post all the religious content your heart desires if you get involved and post. What you are yearning for is at your fingertips.

Marsha, you must not be too concerned with recycling since you sent a post card rather then an email. Perhaps your disdain for YourHub.com is that you are technologically inept? or could it be your jealous of all the creative folks you enjoy writting for your hub, not because they get paid, but beacuse it's fun. By all means keep your REAL paper. I'll stay with YourHub both on line and in print.

I tend to agree with Marsha, though see your points on the postcard and recycling (which I do). Still, populist versus professional journalism will always fall short on quality. I'd love to see freed up resources (from yourhub.com's demise) used for a SERIOUS religion/spirituality section (ALL religious trends, implications, etc). While there are two sections on books/literature in the paper during the week, there is only one religion column and it is purely human interest. Why is more attention not paid to this huge though journalistically invisible aspect of our culture?

Wow. How sad. I would venture to use the term elitist, but I don't want to sound bitter. Thanks for writing though. And hey-- look at ALL the comments!

There is, of course, some irony to be found in the fact that, rather than just sending a quick email, the woman has chosen to send an actual postcard (made of, y'know...paper) to complain about a mostly-online puplication's waste of paper.

From YourHub’s description of itself: “It's a Web site built by the people in metro Denver with help from the Rocky Mountain News. People throughout metro Denver can access their own community's YourHub.com Web site, featuring stories, photos, events, blogs and personal profiles posted by others in their community -- that means you! Each site will also include easy connections to local resources and updated daily events, creating a lively information hub that's focused where you live.” I missed the words “journalistic integrity” in that description, Martha. YourHub is for the common folk to get out there, say what is on their minds, in their hearts, connect, and perhaps garner a little camaraderie or the occasional community gem. So what if there is a once-a-week printed section? I don’t believe in horoscopes, so guess what? I don’t READ THEM. Great thing, freedom of choice. Rather than wasting paper undermining a positive thing, you should simply exercise it.

YourHub.com isn't just a paper or just a website, it's a community -- a community where neighbors can learn about neighbors, local events and whatnot. That's what makes YourHub.com so special. You don't have to be a writer for the Washington Park Profile to share your first day of college or your brother's 30th birthday or something like that. But, if you're so dissatisfied, please, toss us in the recycle bin. After all, I'd hate for you to waste all of that paper by throwing us in the trash.

Marsha; Unfortunately we don't get the Wash Park Profile in Parker. It must be a wonderful paper. I think you miss the big point. YourHub.com is not written by journalists. The opinions, stories, blogs, local news etc are not edited by journalists. Now there's a radical approach. What no bias? I will put our best contributors against the WPP anyday. Oh; and just how can an internet project waste paper? Pixels maybe, but not paper. Anyway I LOVE HO HUM.

YourHub.com is a tightknit group of individuals who are writing COMMUNITY JOURNALISM. If you don't like it, recycle it. We writers, who use it regularly, enjoy contributing our own stories, covering interesting events around town and writing about other newsworthy items the other papers and newscasts seem to ignore. Better yet, why don't you write something and contribute?
