Local DaVita Center recognized in national contest
Contributed by: Janet Forgrieve on 5/29/2008

Lowry Dialysis in Denver, a DaVita dialysis center, has been awarded the Regional and Divisional Wall of Fame prize for its Wall of Fame themed "Lowry, The Fabric Of Life." DaVita, a leading provider of kidney care services, utilizes the DaVita Wall of Fame as part of its effort to build a caring community throughout its centers. The Wall of Fame is a collection of pictures and facts about teammates and patients grouped around a fun theme along a highly-visible wall in the clinic. Winners were selected from hundreds of entries.

"As patients and their caregivers get to know each other better, they continue to create an enhanced sense of community. The Wall of Fame gives us a chance to create a warm and friendly environment and have a little fun along the way," says David Byrne, the Facility Administrator at Lowry Dialysis.

All winners had at least a 75% participation rate in their centers, which means most of the centers' patients, caregivers, and teammates (DaVita employees) helped in some way to create the Wall of Fame. Some just had their picture taken and wrote fun facts about themselves. Others painted, cut, and glued to create their masterpiece.

DaVita began the Wall of Fame program in 2002 seeking to promote patient engagement in the center community. DaVita's dedication to fostering such communities has made it a role model for what a health care patient experience can be. Byrne explains how "Patients and teammates delight in the process of gathering the pictures and facts, which leads to priceless exchanges - and quite often interesting discoveries!" Some centers even invite regular visitors, such as the delivery person, to join in the fun and be part of the DaVita family showcased on the Wall of Fame. The goal for the end result is everyone getting to know each other at a different level-as people, friends and family members-not just by defined roles as patients and caregivers.

Winners were judged by DaVita's Regional Operations Directors and Vice Presidents, and were selected based on their participation, as well as their creativity and execution. More than 1,200 DaVita centers nationwide participated in the 2008 contest.
