Blog Entry 11 of 343 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I adopted a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you as I can. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200-400 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

Meet your new best friend...

Daddies new and experienced, young and old, I have news to share with you.

Advice, actually. Advice that will prove vital to your day-to-day and even hour-to-hour existence and actually improve your quality of life: buy a timer.

Oh, I know that I've earlier advised you to buy batteries and there's nothing new here that would contraindicate that suggestion; you'll still need those batteries.

But right after that - and if you can remember to do so during the same shopping adventure all the better for you - you'll also need to pick up a timer.

Beyond that, you'll have to learn how the various timers that already surround you work; the satellite receiver, the toaster oven, the television - even the phone and computer - you'll need to master them all.

This should not be too difficult a task, given the fact that the long-standing joke about a VCR blinking 12:00 originated with my generation, but it needs to be done all the same.

And then you'll need to buy at least one more timer. One with an analog style face, a ticking sound and a very loud bell.

These will be put into service for speeding up the stowing of clean laundry, the eating of less-than-desired dinner and the ending of time-out periods. They're necessary.

But the one I find myself using the most - or rather, regretting not using when the opportunity presents itself - is the timer on the toaster oven.

See, I don't like toasted toast, I like warmed bread. As such, the toaster oven was the perfect solution because I could put in a piece of bread, set the oven to 350 or so and let the bread warm for roughly two minutes. Perfection awaiting butter...

But now that there are small humans sharing my home with me?

Well, two minutes may as well be a lifetime: I can no more stand in a single place for two minutes than I can carry the earth on my shoulders (and believe me - I've tried both,).

If I put a piece of bread into the toaster oven - at any temperature - I'm going to be so distracted and eventually drawn away that it will take a team of archaeologists to determine when I first put the piece of bread into the toaster.

So use the timer on the machine. It's for your own good. And if the machine in question doesn't come with a timer?
Well, that's why you bought one in the first place, right?

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - Father and man than he was yesterday...
