As a child, according to my mother, I had what she commonly referred to as a "playful imagination."
To this day, she revels in any opportunity to share the most humorous, as well as most embarrassing, moments of my adolescence with those that will lend their ear.
One specific tale she frequently resurrects occurred in 1987 as I visited a Denver doctor's office.
Sitting on the examination table, my mother rubbing my head, I glanced over at the door to see a tall, bearded man in a white coat walk into the room with a clipboard in hand.
The doctor (whose name I can't recall) said, "Hi, Simon! How are we doing today?"
According to my mother, I did not respond or budge.
After a brief moment of silence, again the doctor attempted to goad a response out of me.
"Are we not feeling well today?" he asked in an inquisitive tone.
At this point, as the story goes, I leaned over to my mom and whispered to her a very unique request.
"Simon wants you to call him Mr. Miyagi, please," she relayed to the physician with a grin. "He said he'll only answer to you if you call him by that name."
Of course, if you don't remember, Mr. Miyagi was the martial arts sensei in the 1984 film
The Karate Kid. Apparently I was fixated on that movie, and Mr. Miyagi, for years thereafter.
This time of year, students at many Jefferson County schools will be participating in either winter play productions or sporting events, seeing as the weather is getting more tolerable and the days are growing longer.
Be sure to grab your digital camera and snap away at these fun-filled events. Once you've got the pictures uploaded to your computer, make sure to post them on
YourHub.com along with a small write-up about the event. All submissions are considered for our weekly print edition.
I certainly do regret that YourHub.com and digital cameras were absent during my childhood. I would have loved to see the look on that physician's face when he finally scummed to my demands and said, "OK, Mr. Miyagi, may I please have your attention?" Snap goes the camera and bada-bing, a fine image for YourHub.com.
Who were you as a kid? Chime in and let me know. Talk to you soon.
-Simon (Ahem. I mean Mr. Miyagi.)
