Edgewater chosen to sign Broncos flag

Edgewater may be a small town, but it's home to some big Broncos fans, said Cheryl Archuleta, who has been a resident for 30 years. A couple of weeks ago, the city was invited to enter a contest to receive a visit from the Broncos. Communities were asked to send any sort of submission -- letters, photos, stories -- to prove they were true fans, and eight Colorado cities were selected.

"When we submitted the entry, I thought, 'Well, we've done what we could,'" Archuleta said, who spearheaded the effort to gather submissions from residents. "When we got the phone call that we'd actually won, I couldn't speak."

A Broncos representative will be at the Edgewater Inn, 5302 W. 25th Ave., from 2 to 8 p.m. Aug. 29 to present Edgewater with a Broncos Country flag. Members of the community are invited to come sign an additional flag that will be flown over Mile High, Archuleta said.

Included in Edgewater's submission was an invitation detailing Edgewater's long history as a Broncos town; a sketch of Phillip Thomas, an avid young Broncos fan who also was the grand marshal in the Edgewater Days parade; and a photo of the Edgewater Inn van, which used to shuttle fans to and from the stadium. The Edgewater Inn, owned by the DiPietro family, is a popular place for locals to gather for games, Archuleta said.

"There's this old Edgewater saying, 'If you're not a Broncos fan, don't go near the Edgewater Inn on Broncos Sunday,'" she said.

Invitation sent to Denver Broncos from Edgewater
We, the people of the city of Edgewater, in order to fully express the depth of our gratitude to the Denver Broncos organization, would like to invite you to allow our city, one of the oldest and most avid group of fans, to place our signatures on your flag. It would be regarded with great respect, placed next to the city flag, and passed down through generations.

Generations, as represented by the DiPietro's Edgewater Inn, have celebrated victories and defeats alongside the team. The DiPetro family actually was one of the first to purchase tickets, and even included tickets as prizes during Edgewater Inn's 50th anniversary celebration!

Celebration! Phillip Thomas was celebrating every time he watched his team. We've included a picture of Phillip as sketched, wearing that famous number! One of his happiest times was when he got to meet team members and even made a short video with the Broncos! What a wonderful memory!

Memory! The Superbowl wins and the heartbreaking losses all make up how we look at this amazing team. In honor of these memories, we ask that you join us at the Edgewater Inn on Saturday, August 11, 2007, at 2 p.m. at which time the DiPetro family, the Thomas family, as well as the Broncos extended Edgewater family, will all join together to mark a wonderful experience in their lives!

We thank you.
