Blog Entry 9 of 15 Things, news, whatnot
I'm Karen Ward Gilbert, a (former) community journalist here at YourHub.com. In this blog, I may (have written) about current events, the latest happenings at YourHub.com or blather ranging from what I overheard on the bus to my new favorite chocolate bar.

On the edge of the water: A parade
Contributed by: Karen Ward Gilbert/YourHub.com   on 8/2/2006

It's not news it was hot last weekend. I know this.

But, it was HOT. Africa hot.

So, despite the best-laid plans to take my old University of Wyoming roommate, now a temperate San Diego resident, down to Sloan's Lake to check out the Dragon Boat Festival (and maybe head over to the Edgewater Inn for its famed pizza) -- we failed to make it, deterred by the heat.

Instead, my houseguest, a fellow Denver friend and I paid tribute to the swamp-cooler gods and drank iced tea in my little house with the blinds drawn. On a perfectly good Saturday!

Finally, around 4 p.m., we rustled up enough motivation to get downtown to the Rio Grande for a couple of margaritas. That hit the spot. The limey/icy refreshment (or the tequila) gave us the strength to walk up to Coors Field for the Rockies vs. Padres game at 6:05 p.m. Thankfully, our seats were in the shade and we felt accomplished in beating the heat.

However, next weekend, Aug. 11-13, is Edgewater Days. I'm planning for that weekend to go differently. (And The Weather Channel assures me it will at least feel different.)

First off, it's Edgewater. There is something intriguing about Edgewater, "The City of Choice."

What's more, the festival bills itself as a "small town carnival." And coming from humble, small town roots, I'm all about some nostalgia. Plus, I like eating pancakes on paper plates on street corners and watching parades.

Who's with me?

You're a good friend. I took my University of Colorado friend visiting from Silverthorne for the weekend to Dragon Boat. She already had a stomach ache; I think she actually shed a couple tears as we forced ourselves to watch a race in that heat. Loved those air-conditioned shuttle buses!
