Clown's faces often strike one as that of an older person, but as members of the Jefferson High School Clown Club found out, the real person behind the makeup is often quite young.
Four professional clowns from the Ringling Brothers Circus visited the club in Edgewater on Tuesday, Oct. 10, to share tips on clowning techniques including acrobatics, slap and fall gags, character, and pie throwing.
The four clowns, Jesse Highley, 28, Dean Kelley, 26, Steve Copeland, 22, and Neal Skoy 19, impressed the students not only with their youth, but also with their humor, agility, and professionalism.
Skoy, who admits he was the class clown in high school, is in his first year with the circus - a "first of May clown." Skoy said he is simply living his life-long dream of being of a circus clown.
Kevin Harvey, a retired professional circus clown who helps with the club, and club sponsor, Tim Martinez, Jefferson Campus Supervisor, arranged for the visit.
The four clowns spent two hours demonstrating various gags and techniques in the school auditorium. Martinez said of the visit, "the students were inspired by the skills of the clowns. They learned that the closest distance between two people is a smile."
