Who: The Laboratory of Art and Ideas at Belmar
What: A New Space for Art and Ideas
On September 16, 2006, The Laboratory of Art and Ideas at Belmar, a new nonprofit institution dedicated to advancing discussion of issues related to contemporary culture, will be opening its new space in Belmar, a mixed-use, residential and commercial urban neighborhood in Lakewood.
The Lab's new space opens with an inaugural exhibition of Fantme Afrique, a new film installation by world-renowned film artist, Isaac Julien. Fant?me Afrique is a three-screen film installation shot in Africa, incorporating archival footage from early colonial expeditions and African political history, and The Lab is hosting its US premiere.
Designed by Belzberg Architects, the building's raw interior space will allow The Lab to present significant international contemporary exhibitions, public forums, and multiple lecture series, among other programs. The building includes an iconic entrance structure designed to draw in the surrounding community and encourage exploration. A winding glass-rail staircase, visible from outside the building, connects the ground floor lobby and second floor spaces, creating movement within the space and inviting passersby to engage and participate.
When: The Lab's public grand opening will take place from 2:00pm to 9:00pm and will include an afternoon of events in the plaza area in front of The Lab's entrance. From 5pm to 7pm, The Lab has commissioned local musician Roger Green to produce a musical piece involving electric typewriters. A surprise musical guest will perform from 7:30-9pm.
