The Denver Center Theatre Academy (DCTA) presents the world premiere of
The End of the Beginning
by Newbery Award-winner
Avi
, adapted by
Robert Menna
, for the Elementary School Tour 2006. The Elementary School Tour travels to schools statewide March 27-May 26.
The End of the Beginning
will visit Lumberg Elementary in the Edgewater area on May 2.
The DCTA is an educational department of The Denver Center for the Performing Arts. Its mission is to provide quality children's programming to Colorado students. Within the last few years, the Elementary School Tour has reached more than 100,000 students.
The End of the Beginning
is the story of
Avon
, a small snail who longs for adventures like those he reads about in books. Certain that only an adventure will lead to his happiness, Avon decides to set out into the world and takes
Edward
, an excitable ant, along for the journey. They soon discover many strange and wonderful creatures and learn that the power of friendship can be quite an adventure itself. In tradition of such classics as
The Little Prince
,
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
and
Winnie-the-Pooh
, this completely original story encompasses wit, wisdom, and profound insights about the meaning of things both great and small.
Following the performance, students participate in a post-performance discussion with the cast, which connects them to the performance and helps them understand the creative aspects of the performance process. This production is appropriate for grades K-5. Tours are currently set for schools in the Denver metro, Pueblo, Fort Collins, Estes Park, Centennial, Evergreen, Breckenridge and Dillon areas among many others.
Avi, a Denver resident, has written many books for early readers to young adults on topics ranging from historical encounters to animal stories. He also has many acclaimed novels for middle grade and teen readers, including his Newbery Medal-winning
Crispin: The Cross of Lead
and his two Newbery Honor Books,
Nothing But the Truth: A Documentary Novel
and
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle
.
The cost to book this tour is $300 for Denver metro area schools and $350 for schools outside the Denver metro area. The cost includes a 45-minute performance, study guides of pre and post show activities, a book for the school library, a CD of the book with AVI reading as one of the main characters and a 15-minute post-performance discussion with the cast that connects the students to the play and helps them understand the creative aspects of the performance process. The DCTA offers scholarships to make it possible for schools to host this production.
Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation, U.S. Bank, the Fine Arts Foundation, Excell Energy Foundation and the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District generously sponsor
