Car Show Pays Tribute to Mid-Century Style
Contributed by: Dana Cain on 8/5/2008

Remember when gas was only 25 cents a gallon? Then you're old enough to remember the cars that will be at Denver's newest, most innovative car show on August 17 at the National Western Complex Hall of Education. It's called "Stylish at Any Speed: The Mid-Century Automotive Design Show." The title is from Ralph Nader's infamous "Unsafe at Any Speed" expose admonishing the automakers of the early 1960s.

Maybe they weren't the safest... but the cars designed during the space race era were good-looking and fun. And they have long been favorites with the classic car crowd. Colorado currently boasts more than 100 classic car clubs, and many will be represented at the August 17 show.

Stylish at Any Speed will feature American and European cars built between 1947 - 1977. The show is indoors and air-conditioned, with a full day of entertainment slated. Visitors may also wander through the adjoining Denver Modernism Show, sip drinks in the Tiki Lounge or watch the feature film, Gears, Grease and Guitars at 11am. At 1pm, LA's Charles Phoenix will entertain with his retro slide show, "The United States of Charles Phoenix."

Phoenix, whose father ran a used car lot in the 1960s, has long been a classic car enthusiast and expert. He will be judging the show, and awarding a blue ribbon and $200 to the Best in Show car.

Show hostess Dana Cain, who also runs the adjoining Denver Modernism Show, says, "Great mid-century modern design wasn't just for furniture, art and household accessories. In fact, modern transportation design is what gave us the "streamlined" look to begin with! I want to pay homage to that fact, by putting these cars right next to all the booths filled with mid-century furniture, art and home decor. I want to show the connection."

Cars may be registered online in advance at www.stylishatanyspeed.eventbrite.com . Registration is $20 until Aug. 10 and $25 at the door. Registration includes 2 free tickets to the car show and the Modernism Show. Cars must arrive between 8 - 10 am on Sunday, August 17, and the show is open to the public 10am - 3pm. General Admission is $5. The National Western Complex Hall of Education is at 4655 Humboldt. From I-70, exit north on Brighton Blvd. For more information, visit www.denvermodernism.com or www.DanaCain.com .
