Aimee Wakeman, 10, will be the first ever Mile Hi Council Girl Scout in recorded history to receive the Girl Scouts of the USA's national Bronze Cross Lifesaving Award for helping save the lives of her father and brother when an intruder broke into their house.
WHAT: On the night of April 1, 2005, an intruder broke into the Wakeman family home and started to attack Aimee's father, Michael. Her blows to the intruder, including hitting him with her arm's cast, helped to delay and distract him. The intruder eventually pushed Aimee away and hurt her. This is when she decided to take her little brother upstairs to his room to hide. A short time later, while Aimee checked on her father, the police arrived and encouraged her to get out. However, Aimee turned around and went to get her brother before leaving the house with the police.
Girl Scouts - Mile Hi Council will recognize Aimee for her heroic efforts by presenting her with the national Bronze Cross Lifesaving Award. It is very rare nationally for this award to be given. In fact, this is first time in recorded history that Mile Hi Council has given out this award. Aimee has also received for her heroic efforts the Citizen Citation for Distinguished Service from the Lakewood Police Department (the only one given in 2005) and will receive The Heroes Award from the Jefferson County District Attorney's office soon.
WHY: The Lifesaving Awards have been part of the Girl Scout program since the beginning of the movement in the United States. This award recognizes Girl Scouts who have saved or attempted to save a human life under circumstances that demonstrate heroism with risk to their own lives. It is reserved for those Girl Scouts who have performed heroic acts beyond the degree of maturity and training to be expected at their age.
