Edgewater welcomes new Target store
Contributed by: Erin Feese/YourHub.com on 10/10/2007

Edgewater's highly anticipated Target store at at 1985 Sheridan Blvd. is now open for business. The store hosted a "very important guest" event Oct. 9 and invited city staff to attend. The grand opening is scheduled for Oct. 14.

"We are pleased to have this store in Edgewater, for a number of reasons," said Edgewater Mayor Ronalda Goodner. "One reason being we believe it will bring some very beneficial revenue, and another because they are very community-oriented."

The store is committed to partnering with local organizations and has made donations to Edgewater Elementary and the Edgewater Police Department, said Mike Schmisek, team leader for the new store.

"We hope we can be strong partners with the community and be a great place to shop for local residents," Schmisek said.

At the city's request, the store has agreed to keep its lights on all night to increase the safety of the parking lot and surrounding area, he said.

The store has a pharmacy, Starbucks, Pizza Hut and a one-hour photo center.

"It's a beautiful store," said Beth Hedberg, Edgewater city clerk. "We are so excited to have a brand-new Target store in Edgewater."

Edgewater resident Sheryl McDowell agreed that citizens are ecstatic to have Target moving into town.

"It will be so convenient -- Edgewater is so small, we can even walk over there if we choose," she said.

The store fills the space vacated by Cub Foods in April 2003. Goodner hopes the Target store will be the catalyst to revitalize the Edgewater Market Place by attracting new businesses and building up current ones.

"This is the beginning factor in building our revenue back up," she said.

In the draft budget presented to Edgewater City Council on Oct. 1, the net intra-city sales tax revenue projected for 2008 was $400,000, about an 25 percent increase from 2007, said Adam Gardner, Edgewater City Council member.

"To me, (the opening of Target) is the first domino to fall in a long line of great things to happen for Edgewater," he said

To continue the revitalization of the area, city council hopes to decide what to do with the former King Soopers site at 20th Avenue and Depew Street.

Many ideas have been tossed around, including the possibility of an ice arena, Gardner said. A study was commissioned to explore the ice arena option, and a recreation specialist will present his findings during the regular city council meeting at 7 p.m.Oct. 18.

Target's hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
