DUI drama shows harsh reality of drinking, driving
Contributed by: Erin Feese/YourHub.com on 4/25/2008

The warm morning sunshine was a sharp contrast to the grisly accident scene that unfolded in the parking lot of Jefferson High School on April 24 during a mock DUI scenario. Students watched somberly as firefighters pulled their classmates from the wreckage of two cars.

Operation Prom Night was put on by the Edgewater Fire Department, Edgewater Police Department, Jefferson County Corner's Office and St. Anthony's Flight for Life.

The event was held the day before Jefferson's prom to encourage students to make smart choices and to watch out for drunk drivers on the road.

"If we can prevent one kid from getting hurt, it's worth it," said Terry McBride, a former Edgewater Fire Chief who led the scenario.

McBride told the crowd that emergency personnel work within a "Golden Hour" starting from the moment an accident happens. People who are critically injured have a greater chance of survival if they get to the hospital within that hour, he said.
Although the blood was fake, the message wasn't.

"We can't bear the thought of losing any one of you," said Rachel Hafer, an English teacher at Jefferson, to the crowd of students. She told a story about a former student, Gus, who was killed by a drunk driver in 2001. It was devastating to the Jefferson High community, she said.

Gus was the little brother of Jefferson teacher Oscar Fonseca.

"He never made it to his senior year, never got to go to college, all because of someone else's bad choices," Fonseca said.

Jefferson senior Abbey Prall, 18, played one of the accident victims. She said she got involved because she was in a rollover accident in January and wanted to remind her peers to be safe.

"(The scenario) definitely impacted me -- it was scary being in the car with the glass breaking around you," she said.
