Ice arena coming to Edgewater

City council approves proposal for 20th and Depew

Following three hours of presentation and discussion on the Ice Ranch plan for 20th Avenue and Depew Street, Edgewater City Council gave the project an official nod. Following the announcement that the project was approved, the packed city council chamber erupted into a round of applause.

"This will redefine our community," said council member Adam Gardner, one of the chief proponents of the plan. "It will continue to make this a place where we want to live, but it won't change what makes Edgewater fun."

The city has owned the former King Soopers site for four years, but was unable to find a plan until now that met the city's need for increased revenue and residents' request for more recreational opportunities.

After many studies and consulting with professionals as well as citizens, the ice arena plan was born. Edgewater will sell the property to private developers to construct the approximately $10 million facility. Ice Ranch currently operates a facility at 841 Southpark Drive in Littleton.

Although residents voiced concerns about the increased noise and traffic that will come with such a facility, the overall mood was excitement over the plan.

"I feel so much excitement and positive energy in this room," said Edgewater resident Jeanette Papp during the meeting. "This is community -- when people see so much potential in a project."

Edgewater resident John Moreno told the Ice Ranch representatives, "It's so refreshing to see you giving so much back to the community."

Ice Ranch will construct a free spray park outside the facility as part of the plan, and many Ice Ranch services will be offered at a discount to Edgewater residents. A community room for the city's use, as well as park and recreation offices, are also part of the plan.

Park and Recreation director Lydia Anderson said, "I can't tell you how excited I am. I want to do more programs, and now I will have the means to do so. To have a place known as the recreational center of the city -- that would be fantastic for me."

The plan includes two NFL-size hockey rinks, two snack bars, a full service bar and grill, a workout room and a pro shop. The estimated time for completion is July 2009, said Ice Ranch president Luke Taylor.
