Jefferson County League of Women Voters Legislative Breakfast
The annual LWV/Jeffco Legislative Breakfast on December 5 at the Sheraton West Denver Hotel provided the 62 attendees, including League members and 8 legislators, with an opportunity to first of all share a meal and conversation with individual legislators. Following the meal, the legislators, including Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald; senators Moe Keller, Sue Windels and representatives Debbie Benefield, Sara Gagliardi, Gwyn Green, Jean Labuda and Ken Summers, each gave an overview of the bills or ideas they wished to pursue in the upcoming legislative session. The meeting concluded with questions and answers on such subjects as current identification requirements for driver's licenses, the possibility of revising Colorado's no-fault insurance law, gaining insurance coverage for the HPV vaccination for young women. Other topics concerned the budget and TABOR. Senator Keller pointed out that the legislature promised not to "tinker" with TABOR during the five years Referendum C is in effect. Senator Windels discussed education issues including holding charter schools more accountable. Eve Hudak from the State Board of Education also attended and addressed the group.
